Jamaica claimed three medals on the last day of the World Championships in Sopot Poland, one of each colour, to finish with a total of five medals and a position of fifth overall in the medal standings, beating out the likes of hosts Poland, Germany and Canada.

Jamaica had five finalists in four events on day three and managed success in three of the four events.

The women’s 4x400m team set the tone for the day when the quartet of Patricia Hall, Anneisha McLaughlin, new World Indoor 400m silver medalist Kaliese Spencer and Stephenie McPherson finished second in a time of 3:26.54 behind the USA who won in a world leading 3:24.83. The time run by the Jamaicans was a new national indoor record.

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce competing in her first indoor World Championships then produced a fantastic race in the women’s 60m final, stopping the clock in a world leading 6.98 to grab Jamaica’s only gold medal at the event. Fraser- Pryce got her usual bullet start and streaked away from the field to claim her first indoor gold medal and ensured that the national anthem of Jamaica rang out in Sopot, just like it did many, many times in Berlin last year.

Pre-race favourite, Murielle Ahoure of the Ivory Coast was second and Tianna Bartolleta of the USA was third. Veronica Campbell-Brown was fifth in a season’s best time of 7.13.

Andrew Riley failed to start in the men’s 60m hurdles final, an event won by Omo Osaghae of the USA in 7.45. Pascal Martinot-Lagarde of France who thought he had won the race finished in second in 7.46. Finishing third was another Frenchman, Garfield Darien in 7.47 in what was a blanket finish.

The men’s 4x400m collected the last medal for Jamaica in the final track event of the championships, when they finished third behind the USA and Great Britain. The USA in winning, ran a new World Indoor record of 3:02.13, Great Britain ran 3:03.49 and Jamaica 3:03.69, which was in fact a new indoor record for the country.
