Good morning for Jamaica on day 2 in Sopot as Fraser-Pryce and Campbell-Brown advance

The morning session on day two of the World Indoor Games in Sopot, Poland proved to be a good one for Jamaica as all the island’s representatives and relay teams advanced in their respective events.

The morning session on day two of the World Indoor Games in Sopot, Poland proved to be a good one for Jamaica as all the island’s representatives and relay teams advanced in their respective events.

 

The first athlete on the track was 60m hurdler Andrew Riley. The former Calabar athlete, advanced to the semifinals after finishing third in heat 2 in a time of 7.66. He goes into the semifinal with the 10th fastest time and will have to press harder on the gas to make it to the final.

 

In the women’s 60m, both Shelly-Ann Fraser- Pryce and Veronica Campbell-Brown made it through to the semifinal round. Fraser-Pryce ran a fast 7.12 to finish first in heat 2 while Campbell-Brown was third in heat 4 in a season’s best time of 7.22. Murielle Ahoure of the Ivory Coast ran the fastest time of 7.09 in the sixth and final heat to lead the field into tomorrow’s semifinals.

 

In the men’s 4x400m Jamaica finished second in heat 1 behind nemesis USA in a season’s best 3:06.12. The USA won the race in a time of 3:04.36. Great Britain won heat 2 in 3:06.09 to have the second fastest time of the day.

 

The Jamaican women emulated their male counterparts in qualifying for the final while running a national indoor record of 3:29.43. They also finished second behind the USA who won the heat in a world leading 3:29.06. Both relay finals will be run tomorrow in the afternoon session.
