Calabar High School’s, defending champions for the Boys section of the ISSA Boys’ and Girls’ Championships, sent out a strong signal on Saturday March 1 at the inaugural staging of the Alcors Windows and Doors Corporate Area Development Meet.

The Red Hills Road based school won the 400 meters and 800 meters in all classes, signaling their intentions to defend the Mortimer Geddes Trophy when the Championships roll around between March 25th-28th.

In Class 3, Christopher Taylor ran a stunning 48.54 in heat one while his teammate Brandon Heath won heat 2 in 51.58 followed home by Gaynstead’s Travis Williams in 52.25. Heat 3 was won by Shakquor Thompson of Vauxhall  High in 55.75. Williams of Gaynstead placed third overall on time behind the two Calabar athletes.

In class 2, Akeeme Francis was the only athlete to dip under 50 seconds winning the event in 49.65 while Delano Thomas of Vauxhall High finished second after winning heat 2 in 50.90. Denroy Noble, also of Calabar, finished second behind Thomas in heat 2 and third overall.

Calabar impressed the most in Class 1 where they swept all three heats. In heat 1, Jamari Rose stopped the clock at 49.33 seconds only to see his teammate run a faster 49.03 in heat 2. Shemar Campbell, having seen the times from both heats, then went out and clocked 48.78, the only time below 49 seconds save and except for Class 3 sensation Taylor.

There was only one heat for the Class 3 Boys in the 800m and Calabar promptly swept that event as well. Andrew Ashby was first in 2:09.78, Anthony Danvern second in 2:12.75 and Dorian Wheelon third in 2:13.62.

In Class 2, Gawayne Porter won the first of two heats in 2:01.01 followed by Jean Marc Smith of Kingston College (KC) in 2:01.08. Heat 2 went to Kristoff Darby of KC in 2:01.34 for third place overall.

Rajay Hamilton made sure of a to place on the podium for all classes for Calabar when he won heat 2 of 2 in Class 1, winning in 1:54.76. Nathan Brown of Excelsior was second and Lerone Bowden of KC was third in the heat. All three times were faster than that of heat 1 which was won by Romarieo Turner of Mona High.

The gauntlet has definitely been thrown down to all those who would challenge Calabar for their title at this year’s champs.
