The big two of Malik ‘MJ’ Johnson  and Tafari Simms, on Thursday, handed St. Georges College (STGC) the lead over Ardenne High in the best of three ISSA/KFC Southern Conference Under-16 basketball finals.

The game which was played at the National Stadium courts was a keen an even contest for the first three quarters before STGC blew their opponents away in a devastating fourth quarter.

The ‘Light Blues’ who were leading the game comfortably in the second  quarter of their rain aborted match on Monday, found the going a lot tougher this time around as a much better prepared Ardenne team battled them in a keen contest.

The first quarter ended with STGC leading 10-7 but the second quarter belonged to Ardenne as Matthew Lew and Shemar Williams breathed life into their team.

The shock 19-17 half time lead boosted the confidence of the  Ardenne team but the third quarter belonged to St. Georges and they clawed their way back to take a slender one point lead at 27-26 going into the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter was the Johnson and Simms show as STGC outscored their opponents, 22-9 in a stunning offensive display to run away comfortable 49-35 winners at the final buzzer.

Game two will be played at the same venue on Monday, starting at 3:00pm.
