Ramdin credits Chanderpaul for century

Wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin has described as one of his best innings, a gutsy century which rekindled West Indies first innings against New Zealand following a top order slump on the first day of the third Test at Seddon Park Hamilton.

The Windies vice-captain made 107 and shared in a 200 run recording breaking partnership for the sixth wicket with Shivnarine Chanderpaul to pull West Indies out of another depressing batting collapse.

“I think this is probably one of my best innings,” said Ramdin.

“I just played my natural game. I wanted to … (play) a lot of balls, and I think I did this. There were periods when I thought I was not scoring and I knuckled down and soaked up the pressure.”

The rescue mission came after the West Indies top order crashed against disciplined New Zealand bowling and were wobbling on 86 for five in the first hour after lunch.

Ramdin credited constant encouragement from Chanderpaul for guiding him through his long innings.

“I had a couple of chances, but he kept telling me to tighten up, keep batting and we will build small partnerships,” he recalled.

“I enjoyed batting with him and I learnt a lot, so it was an even day.”
