The Stanley Couch Gym successfully defended its champion gym title last night in front of a large crowd in the 2013 staging of the Jamaica Boxing Board of Control’s (JBBC) National Amateur Championships.  This is its third consecutive hold on the national title after copping the light welter weight, middle weight and the super heavy weight titles ahead of newly returned competitor Jamaica Defense Force (JDF) who had two wins on the night to take the runner-up spot.  The other winners on the night were former title holder Bruising Gym, GC Foster College Gym and Gravesham Gym out of London with one each.

Stanley Couch’s Anthony Clarke defeated Andre Gray of Boys Town in a light welter weight bout after one point was deducted from Gray in round 2 for holding.  The Gym’s second fight went to middle weight fighter Michael Gardner who got the better of Graffique King of JDF on points.  Gardner did not have it easy going as a cut he got on Friday night opened over his left eye.  The third and final win came courtesy of super heavy weight fighter Dukey Rowe who defeated Andre Reid of JDF on points.

JDF copped the first fight of the night in a bantam weight match-up when the corner of Andre McKenzie of Heavy Metal Gym threw in the towel half way into round three after being battered by Nicholas Walker.  Their second win was also the second fight of the finals.  Patrick Sahadeo took out Damion Fuller of Bruising Gym on points in their three-round fight.

Bruising Gym’s sole winner of the final went to welter weight champion Kestna Davis who out boxed Camion Goldson of Stanley Couch Gym.  Davis showed the benefits of his recent trip to Russia courtesy of AIBA for specialized training as part of the JBBC’s Road to Rio’s Olympic journey.

Janathan Hanson of Tiger Gym could not over-come the power and accuracy of Chevon Clarke’s punches in their light heavy weight championship fight.  Clarke who wants to compete for Jamaica hails from the Gravesham Gym out of London.  He looked far superior to Hanson who also went to Russia along with Davis for training.  Hanson who weighed-in at a few pounds over his normal weight had to fight at a heavier weight category.

GC Foster Gym copped the penultimate fight of the championship when Allaystair Walsh put down Cerena Clarke of the Tiger Gym twice in the first round to end the fight in less than three minutes.

Michael Gardner of the Stanley Couch Gym copped the Most Outstanding Boxer Award.  JDF was adjudged the Most Disciplined Gym while its coach Gilbert Vaz bagged the Coach of the Year Award.

The fights were three rounds of three minutes each.  The national gym – the Stanley Couch Gym was the venue for the national championship.

National coach Richard ‘Shrimpy’ Clarke was happy with retaining the champion gym title while crediting the boxers for putting in the hard work and getting the results to match.

President of the JBBC Stephen ‘Bomber’ Jones was pleased with the championship.  He said “it showed that we have the talent here and we will be working to make it to the Commonwealth Games and beyond.”
