Stanley Couch on target in JBBC’s national champs on day 1

The Stanley Couch Gym with four wins in the preliminary round of the Jamaica Boxing Board of Control’s (JBBC) National Amateur Championships began the defense of its title on Friday night in Kingston at the Stanley Couch Gym.  Jamaica Defense Force posted three wins while former national champion gym Bruising Gym had two wins as well as the Tiger Gym. GC Foster and the London Gym had one win each.

The Stanley Couch Gym with four wins in the preliminary round of the Jamaica Boxing Board of Control’s (JBBC) National Amateur Championships began the defense of its title on Friday night in Kingston at the Stanley Couch Gym.  Jamaica Defense Force posted three wins while former national champion gym Bruising Gym had two wins as well as the Tiger Gym. GC Foster and the London Gym had one win each.

 

 There were three second round fights which went to Stanley Couch, Bruising and London gyms one-a-piece.

 

The championship started in front of a large crowd when Camion Goldson of Stanley Couch defeated Chevon Bartley of GC Foster on points. Anthony Clarke took out James Douglas of Bruising Gym also on points.  The exciting Michael Gardner got the better of Oshane Cleary of Heavy Metal Gym after being cut on the chin and the jaw and sustaining a head butt.  The referee deducted two points from Cleary for holding.  Duke Rowe defeated Jamaro Nooks of GC Foster.

 

The JDF’s three wins went to Patrick Sahadeo, Graffique King and Andre Reid.  Sahadeo defeated Toriano Nicholas of Tiger Gym.  Omar Campbell of the Bruising Gym retired in the third round to give the fight to King while Dwayne Blake also of Bruising Gym was disqualified in the first round.

 

Kestna Davis and Damion Fuller took Bruising Gyms two preliminary round wins.  Davis took it easy with Sceantoni Johnson of St. Thomas Gym considering that he had another scheduled fight for the night while Fuller out scored Fanna Walker of the Stanley Couch Gym.

 

Tiger Gym’s Nico Yeyo and the promising Janathan Hanson bagged two wins via different routes.  Yeyo stopped Nickoy Jackson of Boys Town at1:30 in the first round after first going down to Jackson at the start of the round.  Hanson who was exposed to advanced training in Russia along with David as part of the JBBC’s Road to Rio campaign, out-scored Nick Reid of Seaview Gardens.

 

GC Foster’s lone win went to Allaystair Walsh over Roland Gray of JDF after the referee stopped the fight due to a cut received by Gray in the second round.

 

Chevon Clarke out of London who wants to represent Jamaica defeated Chad Richards of the Sugar/Olympic Gym by way of a second round knockout at 2:40 in a light heavy weight bout.  Clarke came back in the second round to defeat Ian Darby on points in the 16th and final fight of the night.

 

Goldson defeated Yeyo in a welter weight bout in his second fight of the night.  The other second round fight went to Davis over Oral Morrison of the JDF in another welter weight bout.  Davis was the lone winner last Saturday in Treasure Beach against the Cayman fighters.

 

The fights are three rounds of three minutes each round.  There are ten weight categories ranging from light weight to super heavy weight.
