Jamaica and Cayman share honours in fight card at Treasure Beach

Jamaica’s Kestner Davis of Bruising Gym defeated Bruce Lee of Cayman to share the honours at the Treasure Beach Sports Park on Saturday night.  Cayman’s debutante Hopkins Ebanks defeated Josua Forrest Davidson of Seaview Gardens Gym after flooring him in the first round.  The other two fights of the four-fight encounter became exhibition fights due to differences in the fighters’ weights.  They are Tafari Ebanks vs Toriano Nicholas of Tiger Gym and Dieg Rodriquez vs Shimon Gayle of Boy’s Town.

The night opened with Hopkins Ebanks against Forrest Davidson who was taking to the ring for the second time as an amateur.  Ebanks was the more alert and faster of the two throwing punches ‘left right and centre’ which seemed to confuse Forrest Davidson who went down at the close of the first round.  Forrest Davidson came out charging at the start of round two but showed signs of tiredness soon after.  He held on for round three but was the clear looser.

Davis took on Lee in the sixth fight of eight fights.  This was the best fight of the night with Davis outscoring the wily and fast Lee to give Jamaica a good win. Davis showed that he had benefited from his recent training abroad.  He was patient at times then came in with some good combination punches.

Four of the eight fights were among Jamaican boxers drawn from several local gyms.  These were G C Foster, Sugar Olympic, Seaview Gardens and Tiger.

Generally the Caymans looked better conditioned and skilled than the Jamaican boxers who seemed unable to properly handle the speed and movement of the visitors.

Stephen ‘bomber’ Jones, president of the Jamaica Boxing Board of Control (JBBC) said that the Jamaicans would benefit from the experience and that he expected better showing in the future.  He also said that the board had approached Cuba for assistance with its training programme and was awaiting their response.

Norman Wilson, one of two Cayman coaches who came with the four fighters was very pleased with their performances though a little disappointed with Lee’s lost to Davis.  He said that the fighters were well prepared for this trip and had ‘executed’ themselves well.  He also said that Cayman’s programme had seen marked improvement since getting assistance from Cuba.

Jason Henzell was pleased with the night’s events.  He was happy to have the Williams sisters who conducted a tennis clinic for over forty children in the morning while Serena attended the fight in the night.  Also in attendance were former champion heavy weight boxer Lennox Lewis, former prime minister PJ Patterson, Billy Heaven who is vying for presidency of the Jamaica cricket Association and Cubie Seegobin.

Seegobin had presented a cheque in the morning for four and a half million dollars to Henzell of the Treasure Beach Sports Park to be used to purchase two acres of land to develop a running track.  Seegobin said “the aim is to develop the best grass track in the island and then to install an all weather track in the future”.  “We see a vision here and want to be a part of it” according to Seegbin.
