Kingston, Jamaica; Olympic bronze medalist and World Championships silver medalist over 200M, Warren Weir, has welcomed the opportunity of being patron for the second staging of the CB Group UWI 5K Run/Walk on Sunday November 17. The second annual event will seek to generate funds which will go directly to sports and academic development at the University of the West Indies through scholarship funding.
Kingston, Jamaica; Olympic bronze medalist and World Championships silver medalist over 200M, Warren Weir, has welcomed the opportunity of being patron for the second staging of the CB Group UWI 5K Run/Walk on Sunday November 17. The second annual event will seek to generate funds which will go directly to sports and academic development at the University of the West Indies through scholarship funding.
Weir will be leading the charge to not only garner support from the public but also from fellow athletes in order to ensure the success of the CB Group UWI 5K Run/Walk. The inaugural staging saw the event making history when it made some JMD $18,000,000 which went directly to student development.
Weir’s patronage is a welcome boost to the event as the organizers seek to continue the drive and improve upon the inaugural success, ensuring more students will be able to benefit from the proceeds of the initiative. Weir will be joined in the rallying of support by the inaugural scholarship recipients who are all ambassadors for this year’s staging of the event.
The public is also invited to lend their support by registering to participate, running or walking, on the day. Registration is only JMD $1,000 and is currently open via the University of the West Indies Sports Department. Groups of 50 persons or more will pay JMD $900 per person while all students can register for only JMD $500. Running Events Jamaica will be in charge of this year’s CB Group UWI 5K Run/Walk and registration through them began on Monday, October 28.
On Sunday November 17 the second staging of the CB Group UWI 5K Run/Walk will get underway at the UWI Mona Bowl at 7:00AM and the ambassadors along with the event’s patron, Warren Weir will be hoping to muster the support needed to better the inaugural achievements. Proceeds from the CB Group UWI 5K Run/Walk were able to provide 20 full scholarships to students for pursuit of tertiary education. This year organizers are hoping to gather enough support to increase that number.
