Shootout in Arlington Corral

They were lined up across from each other; their strategies planned out, nerves were tightly strung and they stood tentatively waiting for the signal to draw their weapons….And then the signal came! Shots were traded and some companions fell along the wayside. It became a ding dong battle and some minor skirmishes were won that gave one side the advantage – the end of the battle was eminent with victory assured. But then those advantages gained were wrenched away and the tide swung.

Nope it was not a synopsis of “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” movie. This was from Sunday night in Arlington stadium when the Cowboys met the Broncos. So let’s go over how it went.  7 minutes into the 1st quarter Romo struck Dez Bryan for a TD then less than 5 minutes later, Cowboys scored again. Clearly the opening shots of the battle. The Broncos, having recovered from those early shots, found their weapons a minute later to put points on the board.

Three minutes into the 2nd quarter Cowboys put one through the uprights to keep the scoreboard ticking over. Then Denver got the bit between their teeth to serve up 14 points clinically to put the Cowboys on their back foot. Then to make sure there was no mistake as to who had the upper hand in the shoot-out, Peyton fooled everybody including his own team when he leisurely doosiedoo’d into the end zone. For a morale boost, Cowboys threaded the uprights again just before the half. Okay everybody back to your corners and regroup, re-plan and refuel the weapons.

Broncos came out of the half more refocused and Brady’s old target touched the ball for the first time in the end zone.  Cowboys weren’t fazed and hit right back with a TD of their own. Matt Prater put 3 points on the board, a precursor of things to come. Cowboys tried to get 8 points but had to settle for 6. Then we got to the pinnacle of the battle – the fourth quarter.

What Dallas couldn’t get done at the end of the 3rd quarter, they got at the beginning of the 4th. The 2 point conversion was good and pushed Cowboys back into the lead. Prater’s legs came into play to tie the score at 41. Cowboys pushed ahead again with a TD and jubilation could be seen all over ‘Jerrytown’. But they left too much time on the clock and the Broncos answered with the man in the know – Knowshon Moreno.

Battered and bruised and winded, the Broncos defense in a last gasp, intercepted Romo that had Jerry winching. Once again the Broncos got the ball back with favourable field position and a tactical genius at the helm! Suffice it to say, they manipulated the clock to perfection such that when Prater’s foot connected with the ball, the game clock read 0:00.

It was a beautiful game to watch for the lovers of points on the board, it was a painful gory display of defense by both teams as allowing 99 points between them is pitiful.

Week 6 is interestingly poised. Big Blue started it by proving that they can get worse. Lovers of rivalries are looking forward to seeing RG III lead the Redskins against the Cowboys – will his knee hold up? ‘The Who Dat’ nation journey up to ‘Bradyland’ for a mouth-watering encounter, will the black and gold stay undefeated? Who will win when ‘Ole Ben’ meet up with young Geno? And who, of the former beating sticks Cincinnati and Detroit, will prevail in their respective games?
