Group D of the LIME/ISSA Manning Cup has been thrown wide open by a most unexpected and intriguing result as the defending champions St. Georges College was stunned by Charlie Smith at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex yesterday.

It was only Thursday, that the ‘Light Blues’ had claimed sole leadership of the group, when they beat Camperdown at the Bellevue field, but found travelling to be an uncomfortable affair this time around.

Three first half goals from, Shamar Price (10th), Ryan  Smith (39th) and Bebeto McDonald (41st) were enough to secure all three points for Charlie Smith and put them back in the reckoning for a place in the second round of the competition.

Charlie Smith’s win coupled with a comfortable 5-0 win for Camperdown against neighbours Vauxhall now means the top three teams in the zone have 17 points with two sets of games to play.

Despite the setback, St. Georges College will still feel that their fate is in the own hands as they lead the zone on goal difference and have the easier run-in on paper. Their last two games are against lowly Donald Quarrie and Vauhall, both at Winchester Park.

The other two contenders will face-off against each other on Tuesday at the Bellevue field with the winner almost guaranteed a spot in the next round.

Camperdown finish against Oberlin, while Charlie Smith finish against Donald Quarrie so the ‘Red and Blues’ will want to get the job done at home on Tuesday to prevent a nervous last day.
