Sibling Rivalry

So Archie’s 2 boys are going to have it out on the field for a third time on Sunday. It’s Eli versus his big brother, Peyton and big brother has won twice, though with a different team. Will the Broncos respond to Peyton’s call and trounce baby brother for a third time?

So Archie’s 2 boys are going to have it out on the field for a third time on Sunday. It’s Eli versus his big brother, Peyton and big brother has won twice, though with a different team. Will the Broncos respond to Peyton’s call and trounce baby brother for a third time?

Let’s look at this some more. Archie Manning was a quarterback for New Orleans Saints, Houston Oilers and Minnesota Vikings and has 3 boys (bet you didn’t know about Cooper – the first born). He schooled them all in the fine art of quarterbacking/receiving which all 3 boys excelled in and all would have been in the league but for Cooper’s spinal injury. Now the other 2 boys are arguably two of the best QB’s to touch the pig skin and make for fine entertainment (even without the ball http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XtuGXO6d4l8).

Peyton has been known to take a note book to family dinners and take notes whenever Eli was speaking about the Giants. This is a hallmark of a man who takes his job seriously and a trait that he demonstrates every game day. He dictates his offense to such a degree that the offense is always lined up in a vanilla format and it is at the line, after he reads the defence, he adds the “flavour” aka calls out the play. Watching him is like poetry in motion and he’s a major pain to most defensive co-ordinators!!

Eli, on the other hand, is grittier! He is the guy you want behind the centre in the fourth quarter being 2 touchdowns down. Eli is Mister Fourth Quarter, Mister Clutch!! Ask Tom Brady (heehee and Giselle) about Super Bowl XLII and XLVI. The Giants should NEVER have won those games…N-E-V-E-R.

However, Game 1 of this season showed a bigger gulf between these brothers than the distance between their team locations. Peyton avenged last season’s playoff loss to the “Team of Destiny” Ravens with a spectacular 462yds, 7 touchdowns, no interception trouncing of a severely depleted Ravens. While the poor Giants mangled their matchup in Jonesopolis aka AT&T Stadium against the Cowboys , racking up 6 turnovers in total in a 36-31 loss: Eli throwing 3 interceptions, one while driving for a go-ahead score, and running back David Wilson losing 2 fumbles.

Despite all the mishaps of the first half, Eli had positioned the team for victory as with 1:50 left in the game and down 30-24. Eli’s pass bounced off RB Da’Rel Scott’s hand and into a defender’s who ran it in for a touchdown. Eli again tried when with 0:11 left on the clock, he completed a TD pass to Brandon Myers. That Manning boy has some brass ones and will always fight to win!

If this Sunday plays out like last week’s games, Peyton could storm the Giants, Eli will fight back valiantly and the game will be decided in the dying moments. However the pummelling could be worse that when, as boys, Peyton would pin Eli down, beat him up and demand he name all the NFL teams. So, Mama Olivia Manning, grab your iodine and Band-Aids as one of your babies might need some boo-boos fixed on Sunday!!
