Hayles pleased with KC Manning Cup opener

Kingston College head coach Donovan ‘DV’ Hayles was pleased with the first showing of his team in the LIME/ISSA Manning Cup on Friday as they got the better of Penwood High in a comfortable 6-1 away win.

Speaking with Yardie Sports after the game Hayles said, “We had a slow start which is to be expected, especially after not getting to play on Tuesday. The small size of the field affected the way we played at the start of the game but as they players adjusted their performance got better.

“We worked hard after conceding to get back into the game. The players showed character and to get all of three before half time is very good.

“We changed our tactics half time and decided to play more diagonals balls to get in behind their defense and it paid off. For them to be able to make the change to such good effect speaks clearly to their ability to concentrate and the confidence they have in themselves and in each other as a group.

“If we can keep it up KC can do some damage in the Manning Cup this year,” he concluded.

Meanwhile Penwood coach Rupert Nicholas, admitted to being over matched by KC. “For the first 20 minutes we played well, but then we could not match them (KC) after that. We have a pretty young team made up of mostly under 15 players. We have back just one player from last year so we are pretty much in a rebuilding mode.

“Injuries are also a major concern as a number of our better players are out injured, but I am pleased with the overall performance,” he stated.
