The DaCosta Cup defending champions Glenmuir High School got off to the ideal start in defending their crown with an easy 2-0 victory over their Zone M opponents Denbigh High School. The champions from Clarendon were without long time coach Jackie Walters who had taken them to glory in the past.

The match started out with Denbigh getting the first chance of the match after about 45 seconds but their striker headed wide from just outside the 6 yards box. It was the closest they would get to the Glenmuir goal in the first half as the champions took command of the game. The champions seemed to have more time on the ball than they could dream of as they casually stroked the ball around building their confidence.

Glenmuir got their rewards for dominating play in the 8th minute when Ricardo Dennis latched onto a pass from midfield and miscued his shot but it was good enough to find its way into the back of the net. This increased their confidence as they kept the ball moving around the pitch and even granting possession to their opponents as they became complacent in possession.

They got their second goal courtesy of a good finish from Romaine Fagan in the 39th minute. Glenmuir could have added one more just before half time but Denbigh’s custodian Mario Baptiste made a brilliant save from point-blank range.

The second half continued in the same vain with Glenmuir dominating play and frustrating their opponents but was not able to add to their tally. Denbigh never got any clear sight of goal but a few long range efforts and scrambles in the Glenmuir penalty area were all they could manage.

At the end of the match Glenmuir’s coach Warren Simpson dedicated the victory to Jackie Walters and also issued a challenge to other teams who were underestimating them. He stated that due to the absence of Walters many teams don’t see the defending champions as strong as they used to be, but they are up for the challenge over the course of the season.
