After and delayed start and an unexpected stop to the track and field season this year, action is set to resume this Saturday with the hosting of Velocity Fest 9 at the National Stadium, starting at 9:00am.

The Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) in a release today, outlined that their Qualification Trials Series will resume next week with two meets, the first on Tuesday and the second on Friday, both at multiple venues.

In between the Qualification Trials will be the previously postponed Central Championships which will be held on Wednesday and Thursday at the GC Foster College.

Central Champs will serve as a qualifier the ISSA/Grace Kennedy Boys and Girls Athletics Championships, which has been moved from the April 27- May 1 date, to May. The newly rescheduled dates for Champs have yet to be released as ISSA awaits approval from the government.

With the 2020 edition of Champs cancelled last year, stake holders believe that a cancellation for a second year in a row would be devastating to the sport and anxiously await positive word from the government.

Reports are that discussions between government and ISSA have been very positive and it is felt that approval will be forthcoming in the next few days.

With all the regional championships, including the Eastern Championships and Western Championships which have been scheduled for the final week of April, being given the go-ahead, it seems an almost  certainty that the much beloved “Champs” will go ahead in mid-May.

As usual, all meets will be held without spectators and all Covid-19 protocols will be observed.
