The Americas Paralympic Committee (APC), of which the Jamaica Paralympic Association (JPA) is a member, has announced Jamaican taekwondo para athlete, Shauna-Kay Hines, as part of a select group of athletes of the continent to contribute creative and innovative ideas to the re-branding of the regional apex body.
The APC is undergoing rebranding with the aim of establishing a new, fresh and modern image and a representative brand identity for the continent which will inspire stakeholder confidence, support and loyalty.
Hines in responding to her historic selection said: “To be selected by the Americas Paralympic Committee to be a part of the rebranding of the APC is rewarding.
“It’s important because not only does it profile in a positive light and gives a memorable impression of the valid contribution athletes make, but it also gives value and appeal to a new partnership for growth in para sports across all regions. As we say in our Jamaican proverb; ‘Wi likkle but wi tallawah’. I will execute and represent Jamaica well.”
The re-branding exercise will involve the thirty-three member National Paralympic Committees of the APC and member surveys will be conducted in ensuring broad-based participation and feedback and stakeholder inclusiveness which are hallmarks of the Paralympic movement.
JPA President, Christopher Samuda, was pleased when advised by the APC of Hines’ selection: “Being an athlete with medal and record performances, laudable as they are, is not for us, in the Paralympic movement, the pinnacle of achievement. You have to become a part of the DNA of the global movement by making your thoughts and actions intimate to the legacies of its past, the currency of its present and the making of its future. Shauna-Kay is expressing that spirit of the JPA.”
The Jamaica Paralympic Association (JPA) has a very creditable medal history at the Para Pan American Games which is the premier para multi-sport championship of the Americas hosted and owned by the Americas Paralympic Committee (APC). The championship was last held in 2019 in Lima, Peru, where Hines was a part of Jamaica’s medal haul gaining the bronze medal in the Taekwondo female Class K 44 (under 58kg).
