Fraser-Pryce and Thompson-Herah stand out in August

Photo: Janieve Russell of MVP Track Club had a best of 55.40 in the Women’s 400m hurdles at the Velocity Fest meets to finish joint fifth on the list of top performers worldwide in that event. 

 

 

 

 

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Elaine Thompson-Herah had the best and second best, times over 100m for women in the month of August. In a season decimated by the Covid-19 virus, there have been only a few competitive meets held across the globe, but the two Jamaicans participated in the locally held Velocity Fest Series held in Kingston, Jamaica where they clocked 10.86 and 10.88 respectively.

Sha’Carri Richardson of the USA had the third best time over the distance of 10.95s while Shaunae Miller-Uibo of the Bahamas who dipped below 10s for the first time in her career, had the fourth best of 10.98. Ajla Del Ponte of Switzerland rounded out the top five with a best of 11.08.

Thompson-Herah also featured in the women’s 200m list with the third best time of 22.19s. Miller-Uibo, who was the only athlete to dip below 22s, had a best of 21.98, Richardson was second best with 22s flat, while Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Cuba fourth best with 22.45 and Lynna Irby of the USA with 22.47.

Two Jamaicans also feature in the women’s 400m hurdles top five. Ronda Whyte of Sprintec Track Club and Janieve Russell of MVP Track Club both had a best of 55.40 at the Velocity Fest meets to finish joint fifth on the list with Oyamide Folorunso of Italy.

That list was headed by the Dutch woman Femke Bol 53.79, Hanna Ryzhykova of the Ukraine and Emma Zapletalova of Slovakia second with 55.19 and Jessi Knight of the UK fourth with 55.27.

The only Jamaican male to make a top five list was Akeem Bloomfield in the 400m. His 45.07s put him in 4th while Davide Re of Italy closed out the top five with 45.31. The top three performers were, Justin Robinson of the USA 44.91, Michael Cherry also of the USA 44.98 and Karsten Warholm of Norway 45.05.

Thompson-Herah will compete in the next Diamond League Meeting in Rome, Italy next Thursday, September 17th where she will battle rival Marie-Josee Ta Lou in the 100m.
