England boss Gareth Southgate was forced to drop Manchester United captain Harry Maguire, after a guilty verdict came down in Greece today.

Southgate had kept Maguire as part of his plans after speaking with the United skipper, but was forced to drop him when Maguire was given a suspended sentence for aggravated assault, resisting arrest and repeated attempts at bribery.

He was given a jail sentence of 21 months and 10 days, which has been suspended for three years.

Maguire was on vacation with his family in the island of Syros when the incident occurred and has continued to maintain his innocence, even after the verdict was released in his absence.

Maguire also released a statement in which he stated that he had instructed his legal team to appeal the guilty verdict immediately.
