Amidst the ongoing global pandemic caused by Civod-19, there are no immediate plans for cancellation of the annual AG Memorial Van Damme Diamond League in Brussels, Belgium.

The meet is scheduled for September 4, 2020 and is set to be a reality in the already highly disrupted track and field calendar. There will however, be a major adjustment as spectators will not be allowed at this year’s staging.

The Diamond League meeting will be broadcast live in Belgium by VRT/Sporza and RTBf with 2020 ticket holders seeing the validity of their tickets extended to the 2021 meeting.

This years events schedule will be different from in previous meets.

According to organizers, a two one-hour world record attempts (for either gender) with British distance runner Mo Farah and Ethiopia’s women’s half-marathon world record holder Ababel Yeshaneh both due to be taking part.

Another special feature will be that of a rarely contested “ triathlon” between past and present world champion Heptathletes – Belgium’s Olympic champion Nafissatou Thiam and British world champion Katarina Johnson-Thompson. The competition will consist of the 100 metres hurdles, Shot Put and High Jump.

Men’s Pole Vault, Women’s 400m, Men’s 200m and a Mixed 4x400m relay are the other events promised to be on show.

To date none of the Diamond League Meetings for 2020 have become a reality with those on the first half of the roster all cancelled due to Covid-19.

Ironically the Brussels meeting is usually the finals of the Diamond League series.

Memories from last year’s event are fresh in the mind of many Jamaicans. Thousands tuned in to watch 100m Hurdler Danielle Williams defeating world record-holder Kendra Harrison to secure the Diamond Trophy and made her claim for selection to the World championship in Doha, following an epic controversy earlier at the National Trials.
