Photo: Shericka Jackson has won a medal in the 400m at consecutive global championships for Jamaica and will be looking to book her ticket to the London World Championships this weekend.
The reigning NCAA 400m champion Chrisann Gordon, is heading home to challenge for a spot on Jamaica’s World Championship team to London this summer.
The former Holmwood Technical standout, and competed recently for Texas AM university, will lock horns with 2015 World Championship and 2016 Olympic bronze medalist Shericka Jackson is the women’s 400m race.
Gordon with a personal best of 50.39 seconds enters the championships as the fastest Jamaican this season and will be vying for her first senior, individual spot to a major championship.
Her time ranks her fourth best behind world leader, Bahamian Shaunae Miller-Uibo (49.77 seconds), USA’s Quanera Hayes (50.04 seconds) and Botswana’s Lydia Jele (50.32 seconds).
Jackson who has run sparingly this season will look to lower her 51.06 seconds season’s best and book her spot to London as well.
The MVP athlete who is coming off two outstanding seasons, with medals at both championships (World and Olympic Games) was unable to face the starter at the JN/Racers Grand Prix Meet, but word from her camp is that she is fit and ready to go come this Saturday.
Veteran Novlene Williams –Mills enters the championship as the second best Jamaican this season with a time of 50.54 seconds. She will be looking to seal her spot to a sixth consecutive IAAF World Championship in what will be her farewell track season.
Two time World Championship finalist and 2016 Diamond League champion in the 400m, Stephanie Ann McPherson will have the least of the pressure to handle considering she has a bye to the London World Championships but will look to improve on 51.45 seconds season best and take aim at the national title.
The chasing pack for spots to the summer games includes Sprintec’s trio of Anneisha McLaughlin- Whilby (51.63 seconds), Verone Chambers 51.70 seconds and Anastasia Leroy 51.75 seconds.
The race could also feature the likes of Collegians Junelle Bromfield (UTech) and Dawna Lee Loney (Mico University), both of whom have season best at 52.05 seconds.
World Championship representative Christine Day will have to ignite some of the spark she showed in the 2015 season, if she hopes to book at spot in London. Her season best stand at a mere 52.25 seconds.
The top six finishers will make up the relay pool that will compete in London.
