John Mills lead after day 1 at INSPORTS All-Age & Junior High Athletics Championships

Kingston, Jamaica – John Mills are the early leaders, with defending champions Windward Road in second at the end of day one of the three-day INSPORTS All-Age & Junior High Athletics Championships at the National Stadium East on April 26, 2017.

 

John Mills, the most successful team at these championships with 22 titles overall, accumulated the most points after five finals.

 

The Retirement Crescent based institution leads both boys and girls tables to end the day well ahead in the overall standing with 63 points. Windward Road, who are aiming to secure a fourth straight title are second overall on 31 points, followed by Constant Spring and Cockburn Gardens – both on 26 points.

 

Swallowfield, the only other team to reach double figures, are fifth with 12 points.

 

With all five finals coming from field events, John Mills were dominant with teammates Shadiamon Bennett (8.85m) and Shaniel Stevens (8.25m) claiming gold and silver in the Girls’ Open shot put. Amara Irving of Cockburn Gardens got the bronze with a throw of 8.13 metres.

 

The top-two spots in the Class Two Boys’ high jump also went to John Mills. Tushawn Lawson (1.60m) won gold ahead of teammate Leo-Paul Foster, who cleared the bar at 1.50 metres. Kimarley Baker (1.50m) of Windward Road took the bronze.

 

In the Class Three Girls’ long jump, gold went to Constant Spring’s Aaliyah-Kay Wallace, who outclassed her rivals with a distance of 4.96 metres. The silver medal went to Shanika Estrin (4.39m) of John Mills, while Constant Spring’s Bianca Barham earned the bronze with a mark of 4.24 metres. 

 

 

John Mills secured gold and bronze in the Class One Girls’ high jump, with Shantae Alexander finishing atop the podium after clearing the bar at 1.40 metres. Ashanti Isaacs (1.35m) of Windward Road took the silver, while Bennett (1.30m), who would later win the shot put, was third.

 

Devonte Smith of Swallowfield best the field in the Class Three Boys’ long jump, claiming gold with 4.79 metres, ahead of Constant Spring’s Jaheel Burke (4.65m) and Kyle Jones (4.62m) of John Mills.

 

Action resumes tomorrow at 9:00 am with 18 scheduled finals with the highlight likely to come from the 200 metres in the afternoon session.
