CHAMPS CONTENDERS MAKE STATEMENTS AT WESTERN RELAYS

Photo: Hydel High dominated the girls sprint hurdles while following home the “Big Two”, Edwin Allen and Holmwood Technical in the Relays at the Milo Western Relays at the Catherine Hall Stadium on Saturday.

Three relay records along with a few individual event records were rewritten as the nation’s junior and senior athletes put on a fine display at the Milo Western Relays on Saturday.

Wolmerain hurdler Valissa Brown signaled her intentions ahead of the upcoming ISSA/Grace Kennedy Boys and Girls Championships next month, securing the Class 3 Girls 80 Meter Hurdles gold on a beautiful day at the Catherine Hall Stadium. Brown crossed the line in 11.33 seconds, erasing the old mark of 11.60 previously set by Ray Donna Lee of Hydel. Edwin Allen’s Patrece Clarke 11.96 seconds and Valecia Williams of Hydel (11.98 seconds) finished 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Trishauna Hemmings 13.66 seconds, Ray Donna Lee 13.50s and Shannoya Pottinger 11.34, ensured Hydel won the Classes One, Two and Four events, Hemmings and Lee doing so in new meet record.

In the relays, a host of elite stars and high school standouts were itching to clash in the relay events on offer. They didn’t disappoint and gave the crowd much to cheer about.

Defending Girls Championship team Edwin Allen was first to hit the winners column, copping the Class Four Girls 4×100 relays final in 47.91 ahead of Hydel High 49.24 seconds and Mount Alvernia 50.10 seconds.

Edwin Allen staved off another challenge to secure the Class Two final in 45.84 ahead of nemesis Holmwood Technical 46.34 seconds and Hydel High 46.92 seconds.

Holmwood Technical broke the Edwin Allen streak copping the Class Two final in 46.03 seconds, stepping away from Hydel High 46.43 and Edwin Allen 47.15 seconds.

The Class One Girls event was again down to the wire with Edwin Allen 44.87 repelling Holmwood Technical 45.35 and Herbert Morrison 47.97, for the win.

The rarely contested Class 4 Boys 4×100 Meter Relay saw victory for Kingston College in a new record time of 45.07, erasing the old mark of 45.08 seconds by a whisker. Cornwall College 47.34 and St Elizabeth Technical High 47.83 seconds rounded out the top three.

The ‘Purples’ also won the Class Three final in 44.46 bettering the St Elizabeth Technical team 46.49 3 and Manchester 46.76 seconds.

Kingston College won the Class Two event for their third win on the trot, in a modest 42.59 seconds ahead of Petersfield High 43.47 and Excelsior High 43.55 seconds.

A clean sweep was not possible as the boys from North Street made a mess of the baton change in the Class One final, and opened the way for eventual winners Excelsior High to taste victory in 41.01 from Manchester 41.52 seconds and Ruseas High 41.94 seconds.

Seeing action in his first race since his ongoing doping issues, Nesta Carter ran anchor for his MVP team but was pipped on the line by the University of Technology in 39.42 seconds. MVP 39.43 seconds and G.C Foster College 39.47 seconds finished in the minor spots.

The MVP Track club would not settle for another runner-up spot, as double Olympic sprint champion Elaine Thompson produced a scorching run to overtake Sprintec Track club, and won going away in 43.61 seconds. Ristanana Tracey carried Sprintec home in 44.73 seconds ahead of University of West Indies 47.93 seconds.

The Boys 4×800 Meter Relay Open went to the Kingston College in 7:42.26 ahead of St Elizabeth Technical 7:42.95 seconds and Munro College 8:07.64 seconds.

In the Men 4×800 Meter Relay, Knox Community College won in a new meet record of 7:32.84 seconds, edging G.C Foster College 7:41.05 and the high school team from Kingston College 7:56.97 seconds. The previous mark of 7:32.92 stood since 2013.

There was no stopping Holmwood Technical in the Women’s equivalent as they romped to victory in 8:59.54 ahead of Edwin Allen 9:03.60 seconds and Hydel High 9:24.23 seconds.

The Class 1 Boys 4x200m relay was won by Munro College 1:26.94 ahead of Kingston College 1:27.30 and Green Island High 1:28.25 seconds.

The Class 2 Finals saw another victory for Kingston College 1:30.27 seconds, running away from Ruseas High 1:30.37 and Munro College 1:31.03 seconds.

Holmwood Technical was triumphant in the Girls 4×200 Meter Relay Open in 1:36.00 ahead of a chasing Hydel High School 1:37.42 seconds and Edwin Allen 1:37.53 seconds.

G.C Foster College secured the Men 4×200 Meter Relay club/institution in 1:23.64 seconds relegating University of Technology 1:23.72 seconds and UTech Track Club 1:26.31 seconds.

The Men’s 1600 Sprint Medley Open went G.C Foster College 3:26.92 seconds from Kingston College 3:33.95 and Sprintec 3:35.50 seconds . University of West Indies (3:53.74) rally to top the high school teams Edwin Allen 4:01.53 and Holmwood Technical 4:08.50 in a new record time.

The highly anticipated Girls 4×400 Meter Open Finals went to Holmwood Technical in 3:40.91 ahead of Edwin Allen 3:43.21 and Hydel High School 3:47.23 seconds.

The Boys 4×400 Meter Relay was won by Kingston College 3:14.74 seconds ahead of St Elizabeth Technical 3:16.13 and Petersfield High 3:17.40 seconds.

The Women’s 4×400 Meter Relay for clubs produced another win for MVP in 3:32.67 seconds, topping Sprintec 3:33.16 seconds and UTech Track Club 3:41.85 seconds.

G.C Foster College 3:08.55 secured the Men’s equivalent ahead of Sprintec 3:09.23 and UTech 3:15.43 seconds.

Other notable performances on the day came in the Men Long Jump Open. Tajay Gayle (Utech T.C.) leaped to 8.00m to erase the record of 7.61m set in 2011 by UTech’s Ramone Bailey. G.C Foster pair of Aubrey Allen 7.53m and Shawn-D Thompson of G.C Foster 7.52m finished second and third respectively.

Kobe-Jordan Rhooms of Cornwall College (2.05m) and Janique Burgher of Edwin Allen (1.70m) won respectively the Open High Jump events .
