Kingston College, Hydel High dominate 2017 McKenley/Wint Classic

The ISSA/Grace Kennedy Boys and Girls Champs 2016, runners up Hydel High girls track and field team, and Kinsgton College provided strong showings at the 2nd installment of the McKenley/Wint Track & Field Classic held on Saturday, January 21, 2017 on the grounds of Calabar High School.

With noticeable top name absentees, such as Christopher Taylor, Dejour Russell and Michael Stephens from the Calabar squad, Kingston College with their throng of supporters dominated much of the day’s proceedings as did the Ferry based Hydel High.

The Henry Brothers, Gianna (4:24.49 s) and Giovouni (4:24.97s) dominated the Class Three Boys, 1500m leading a clean sweep for the North Street boys as Tajah Taffe rounded out the top three places with a time of 4:38.06 seconds.

The inform, new kid on the block, Kingston College’s Aryamanya Rodgers hardly broke of a sweat in securing Class Two in 4:02.38 seconds. Calabar Pair of Kevroy Venson (4:06.96s) and Kimar Farquarson ( 4:06.97s) secured the minor placings.

Mavis Bank High Garfield Gordon( 4:04.65s) registered the fastest time in the Class One event, ahead of Kingston College’s Nicholas Elliot (4:06.43s) and St Jago’s Keenan Lawrence (4:06.85s).

Hydel’s Monifa Green was in cruise control copping the Class One event in 4:50.46 seconds, dismissing the challenge of Vere’s Technical’s duo of Britnie Dixon ( 4:52.53s) and Kaye Ann Plummer (5:04.97s).

Edwin Allen’s Anna Lee Evans (5:02.16s) ran out best of all in the Class Three Girls 1500m, turning back the challenge of the Hydel pair of Zenon Kerr (5:05.48s) and Emily Coley (5:07.94s).

Rushana Dwyer secured the same for Edwin Allen in Class Two clocking 4:52.84 seconds ahead of Mavis Banks Shantae Chamberlin ( 4:56.94s) and Vere Technical’s Kris- Ann Plummer ( 4:58.84s).

Hydel’s Sharika Campbell won the Class One Girls 100m in 11.99 seconds ahead of Wolmers Shamika Burton (12.09s) and Vere Technical’s Amoi Brown ( 12.10s).
Immaculate’s Shanunelle Wallace recorded the fastest time amongst the female sprinters cruising to victory in 11.84 seconds to secure the Class Two event. T-Anna Dawkins (11.96s) and Hydel’s Ashanti Moore (11.98s) were second and third respectively.

The Class Three event went to Campion’s Krystal Slowey ( 11.97s), edging Hydel’s Gabrielle Matthews ( 11.99s) and St Andrew High’s Tenna Mair (12.10s).

Edwin Allen’s Britney Johnson (12.45s), Wolmerian Dekanya Webb (12.48s) and Immaculate’s Chanel Honeywell (12.66s) rounded out the top three in Class Four.

On the Boys side, it was St Jago’s Andre Morrison who was best of all, winning Class One in 10.51 seconds. Munro’s Delano Williams 10.54 seconds and Malik Smoth of Bridgeport 10.57 seconds rounded out the top three.

Calabar’s Tyreke Wilson on his return to the track finished fifth overall in 10.66 seconds.

Justin Birthwright of Jamaica College (11.01) won Class Three ahead of the Kingston College pair of Bouwahghi Nkrumie, (11.06) and Adrian Kerr (11.20s) respectively.

Hydel’s Garriel White (57.01s), The Queen’s School Britney Brown (56.58s) and Vere Technical’s Cavel Whitely (56.62s) took top honours in the Class Three, Two and One Girls 400m respectively.

Calabar’s Anthony Carpenter 47.45 seconds showed best in the Boys 400 Meter Dash Class One. Dashawn Morris Kingston College (48.49s) and Ramone Lindo of Vere Technical High (48.75s) had to settle for the minor spots in that event.

Munro College’s Tajay Gardener (52.41s) and Calabar’s Evaldo Whitehorn (49.81s) ran out winner in Class Three and Two respectively.

Wolmer Girls secured a double victory in the sprint hurdles (70 and 100m) with Krystal Constantine (11:01s) and Janeek Brown ( 13:98s) winning in Class Four and One respectively.

The Hydel Girls had a clean sweep in Class Three led by Gabrielle Matthews ( 11:70s), Velecia Williams ( 11.80s) and Gizel Clayton (12.06s) respectively.

The talented Ray Donna Lee easily took the Class Two event in 14.10 seconds, with teammate Taffara Rose hanging on for second in 14:68 seconds and finishing third was Queen’s Daniella Dawkins.

Kingston College’s Davion Williams ran 56.30 seconds to secure victory in the Class Two 400m hurdles, before securing the runner up spot in the sprint hurdles in 14.57 seconds. The sprint hurdles went to his teammate Wayne Pinnock in 14.42 seconds. Vere Technical’s Ramone Lindo won the Class One 400m hurdles 54.91 seconds.

Hydel’s Shian Salmon was the best amongst the female 400m hurdlers , winning that event in a 1:00.78 seconds. She later secured the double, with victory in the Class One Girls High Jump ( 1:75m).

Hydel’s Bianca Samuels (1:58m), Vere Technical’s Lamara Distin ( 1:65m) and Wolmers Girls Malaik Cunningham ( 1:50m) recorded wins in the Class Three, Two and Four High Jump events respectively.

Calabar dominated the High Jump event winning in Class Two courtesy of Richard Cunningham (1.90m) and Class Three with Bebetto Boyd (1:65m). Cornwall College’s Kobe-Jordan Rhooms registered a clearance of 2.00m to win in Class One event.

In the Shot Put, Class One, Devia Brown 13:50m secured the gold, ahead of St Jago pair of Sahjay Stevens (13:49m) and Gabrielle Bailey with a heave of 13:00m.

Brown later went on to complete the double by winning the Discuss event in 45.96m, ahead of Bailey 44.97m and Vere’s Avery Pryce 43:55m.

Kingston College’s Rasheeda Downer (16.81m) and St. Jago’s Roje Stona (56.56m) won the Class One Shot Put and Discus respectively.

Young Newmoy Cokett secured the Discus and Shot Put double with marks of 46.36m and 14.49m respectively.

The Women’s Olympic development 400m saw Hydel’s Ronisha McGregor winning in 54.22 seconds ahead of Mico University Samantha James 54.70 seconds and unattached athlete Satina Edwards 58.94 seconds.

Akan Track Club’s, Mario Forsythe secured the Men’s equivalent in 48.91 seconds ahead of teammate Wayne McPherson 49.50 seconds and Mico’s Lawayne Thomas 49.67 seconds.

Ricardo Cunningham, competing for Vision Track club, won heat 1 and secured the top spot in the 800m in a time 1:52.73 seconds. Olympic 400m runner and Akan Track club athlete opened his season with victory in heat two of the 800m and second overall in 1:54.08 seconds .

Mico’s Dawna- Lee Loney won the women’s equivalent in 2:22.39 seconds.

Kingston College’s Kristoff Darby who fought gallantly to stave off a challenge from Javon Francis in the homestretch, still managed to secure fastest school boy time on the day, finishing third overall but second in the heat in 1:54.13 seconds.
