Thousands of runners, walkers and wheelchair participants are expected to converge at The University of the West Indies for the fifth staging of the CB Group/UWI 5K on Sunday, November 13, 2016 starting at 7:00 a.m. sharp.  Students from schools in Kingston and St. Andrew will not be left out as there will be the popular Smart Eggs Kids K for children under 11 years old who wish to participate in the race day fun.

The event, which was established to support The University of the West Indies Scholarship Fund, to assist students with their tertiary education, has again received the commitment from the CB Group as the title sponsor.  Also, on board are corporate sponsors: National Baking Company, Scotiabank, Port Authority, Proven Investments, Mayberry Investments, Rainforest Seafood, European Union, CVM, Island Grill, Sun Bloc, Power 106, The Pegasus Hotel, Dunlop Corbin, Newstalk and Running Events.

This year’s event is under the distinguished patronage of two outstanding philanthropists – the Honourable Douglas Orane, OD, Business Leader, Fundraiser and Author; and Donette Chin-Loy-Chang, PR Counsel, Fundraiser and Co-Patron of the UWI Toronto Benefit Gala as well as Co-Chair, Food for the Poor Canada.

“Together with you, we have awarded over 100 scholarships to UWI students and changed their lives forever. We are pleased that many have gone on to achieve first class honours and are well on their way with their careers.  I am always impressed by the perseverance, passion and “brain power’ of these students – most becoming the first in their families to attend a tertiary institution”, stated Mrs. Chin-Loy Chang.

A special feature of the annual event is an award which is presented to a Jamaican who has made outstanding and dedicated service to sports. This year the Award will be presented to Hon. Molly Rhone, OJ, CD, who has served with distinction in the field of Netball.    Professor Archibald McDonald, Pro Vice Chancellor and Principal of the UWI Mona Campus had this to say:  “The University is proud to honour Molly Rhone for her tremendous contribution to Netball. Mrs. Rhone has played a significant role in the success of netball in Jamaica.  She is a national treasure”.

The annual fundraiser which is again under the professional direction of Alfred “Frano” Francis of Running Events Jamaica, last year attracted over 4,000 participants and raised a sum of  J$10.5M.

“We look forward to all of Jamaica coming out in significant numbers to assist us in surpassing our target of J$20M. The future of Jamaica is in the hands of our youth.  Your participation in this event will contribute significantly to nation building”, said Mr. Matthew Lyn, C.O.O., CB Group.
