GC FOSTER COLLEGE OUT FRONT ON DAY ONE OF THE NCB INTERCOLLEGIATE CHAMPIONSHIPS 2016

Photo: Jaheel Hyde won the male 400m hurdles in 50.56-seconds for the University of the West Indies on day one of the NCB Intercollegiate Track and Field Championships at the National Stadium on Friday.

The 2014 Intercollegiate Champions, GC Foster College has taken a quick burst from the blocks and will look to hold the fort to the closing of the 56 staging of the NCB sponsored Track and Field Championships.

The defending champions, University of Technology ( UTECH) lost both 100 metres titles that they won courtesy of 2015 World Championship 200m silver medallist Elaine Thompson and former national representative, Bahrainian Andrew Fisher.

The 2011 World Championship representative Jura Levy and Gayon Evans gave the Spanish based institution the quinella in the ladies final, with the former crossing the line in 11.38 seconds (-0.5m/s) ahead of Evans 11.92 seconds and UTECH’S Christania Williams in 11.97 seconds.

It was first and third for GC Foster in the male equivalent, 2011 national champion Oshane Bailey sped to a 10.15 seconds (+0.2m/s) season’s best to win ahead of Utechs’s Kavean Smith 10.21 seconds and teammate Collin King in 10.36 seconds.

Commonwealth Games medallist Janieve Russell donning the colours of University of Technology made a successful defence of her 400-metre hurdles title, stopping the clock at 56.76 seconds. She was followed home my University of West Indies (UWI) Rushelle Clayton (57.81sec) and GC Foster’s Rhonda Whyte (58.36sec).

The 2014 World Junior champion and 400M National Junior record holder Jaheel Hyde, in his first collegiate outing for the UWI team, won the male equivalent in 50.56-seconds, romping home ahead of teammate Jamar McNaughton 51.74 seconds and GC Foster’s Marcel Murray (52.14sec hanging on for third spot.

Mico University College had success in the women’s 800m, with 2015 silver medallist Samantha James winning in time of 2:11.29 minutes, staving off the challenge of GC Foster College pair of Danielle James (2:15.83) and Roshea Burrell (2:18.59).

GC Foster was also made to accept the minor spots in the male equivalent with Knox College’s Chadoye Dawson copping the title with 1:52.67 seconds effort. Kegan Campbell (1:53.96 secs) and Rory Rhoden (1:52.72 secs) both of GC Foster College came home in second and third respectively.

Danielle James crossed the line first in the 3000m steeplechase was later disqualified handing victory to teammate Conangela Senior, 13:44.97 secs . The second spot went to Utech’s Shanika Bryan 14:54.48 seconds. Shana Wright of Utech was also disqualified in the field of four.

The male equivalent gave GC Foster more to celebrate with Webster Chung 9:56.94 seconds and Oshane Archibald 10:20.62 seconds holding off The Mico University college Dino Rochester 10:31.95 seconds.

Action from the field saw UWI Fedrick Dacres winning the men’s shot put with a throw measuring 17.98 metres, ahead of GC Fosters Demar Gayle (17.61m) and UTech’s 2015 silver medallist Alec-Vern Longmore (16.08m) settling for third.

Aubrey Allen of GC Foster went one better this year, copping the men’s triple jump with a leap of 16.09 metres. The Utech pair of Tajay Gayle (15.78 metres) and Demar Whyte (14.61m) finished second and third respectively.

The women’s long jump final went to Todea-Kay Willis (UWI) with a leap of 6.21 metres. She defeated Utech’s Jessica Noble (6.06m) and UWI Kerrie-Ann Francis (5.64) rounding out the top three.

David Hall of GC Foster College won the men’s high jump with a height of 2.04 metres, followed by Carlington Moulton (2.01m) of UWI with Shevaughn Dawson (1.89m) of Exed Community College in third.

GC Foster College claim the top two in the women’s Javelin Throw through Olivia Leckford (43.26 metres), ahead of teammate Taleika Nelson (40.14m) and third going to UWI’s Isheka Binns (39.91m).

After seven events scored, GC Foster led on women’s side with a score of 64 points, followed by defending champion Utech on 48 points and UWI 45 points. On the Male side GC Foster also closed on 64 points, ahead of UWI (43) and defending champion Utech (43).

The women’s sprint medley and 4X400m relays will be run as straight finals due to the limited number of teams.

Action is scheduled to resume at 1:00 pm on Saturdays second day. Events down to be contested are 400m, 100m hurdles and 110m hurdles, 200m, 1,500m, 5,000m, sprint medleys, 4X100 and 4X400m relay finals. The women high jump, triple jump, and shot put, as well as the men’s long jump, discus and javelin throw.
