UWI Invitational set for April 2

UWI Invitational Track & Field Meet,Grace Jackson, Penn Relays,

The 14th UWI Invitational Track & Field Meet is set to sizzle at the UWI/Usain Bolt track at the Mona campus in Kingston on Saturday April 2 starting at midday with preliminary events by prep and primary schools and high schools preparing for the Penn Relays.  The opening ceremony begins at 1:00 pm after which the professional athletes will take to the track for high level competition.

 

According to Grace Jackson, chairman of the organizing committee and the meet director, there will be several top class athletes from the Caribbean coming to match their skills with the Jamaicans.  They include athletes from Bahamas, Barbados, Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago.

 

Entries have been pouring in from the clubs across the island ahead of the deadline.  The bulk of the Jamaican athletes will be drawn from the local clubs and institutions including Akan, Racers, Sprintec, Cameron Blazers, MVP, UWI and other clubs. 

 

Jackson though cautious about naming athletes, did list honouree Federick Dacres as a senior athlete who will be on the track.  Dacares who attended the launch said that he was healthy and hoping to do well at the meat ahead of the Olympics.  He was announced as one of the honourees.

 

Several prep and primary schools have been invited to compete in the 4x100M while some secondary schools preparing for the Penn Relays will also be on the track.

 

This year’s events include Discus, Shot Put, Javelin, Long Jump, High Jump and Triple Jump while the track events are 100M, 200M, 400M, 800M, 1500M, 100MH, 110MH, 400MH, 4x100M, 4x400M, 4x800M and sprint medley.

 

The honourees this year are student athlete Federick Dacres, official Beverley Bogle and Olympian Trevor Campbell.

 

Spectators can expect increased accommodation in the VIP section as well as other upgrades to ensure comfort for all attendees.

 

This year’s pre-meet seminar is geared towards the coaches and athletes. It is set for next Thursday March 31 at the UWI medical science block. The main presenter will be Professor Wolfe out of the UK.  Presenters at the two previous seminars will also be on the floor.  They are Olympian Dr. Neil Gardener and Dr. Paula Dawson plus Dr. Horace Fletcher of the UWI.  It will also feature ‘conversations with athletes’.
