The World Indoor Championship got on the way on Friday in Portland Oregon, USA.

Jamaica’s lone male entrant in the 60m Asafa Powell started his campaign with a national record and fourth best time of 6.44 seconds — the fastest time in the world since 2009 — and he did so letting up at the line.

Less than four hours later, he ran 6.44s again to win his semifinal. In the final however it was young American sprint star Trayvon Bromell who romped to victory in the men’s 60 metres . The 2015 World Championship bronze medallist crossed the line in 6.47s ahead of Powell 6.50s and Ramon Gittens of Barbados third in 6.51 seconds.

Powell expressed his thoughts to reporters at the end of his race.

“I’m happy with a medal but I’m not overly excited because if I had run a 6.44 in the final I would have won the gold medal. “

There are two previous World Indoor silver medallists for Jamaica were Michael Green in Paris in 1997 and Nesta Carter in Istambul, Turkey in 2012.

The other Jamaican competitors, Stephanie Mcpherson advanced to the next round of the 400m, but her teammate Chrisann Gordon was involved in a tussle on the final lap of her race and failed to finish.

Both Fiztroy Dunkley and Ricardo Chambers finished second in their races.

Salcia Slack competing in the Pentathlon is in sixth position on 837 points after three events completed.
