Tiffany James is now a collegiate athlete studying at the Mico University College, but with age eligibility is focused on becoming World Junior 400m champion and she will be reporting for the Carifta Trials in a build up to the Junior Trials in June.

“I will be at the Carifta Trials to just come out here and to do my best and make the team. The ultimate goal however is to win at the World Juniors this year,” James told Yardie Sports.

The 2013 National Junior Champion, James ran 53.56 and crossed the line in third place to win the bronze medal behind gold medallist Sabrina Bakare, 52.77 (Great Britain) and USA’s Olivia Baker, 53.38 at the 2013 World Youth Championships in Ukraine. She also made it to the 400m semi-final at the 2014 World Junior Championship in Oregon USA.

She ran a very quick third leg to assist her team in securing the silver medal in the Women’s Clubs and Institution 4X 400m final, behind the team from the University of Technology. She was rather pleased with the team results.

“It was a pretty good race. We just came out here and told ourselves we will give the best for our club and we did just that,” she explained.

Already accustomed to hard training since her days at Papine High School, James said nothing has really changed since moving into the Bertland Cameron led Cameron Blazers Track Club and Mico University College led teams. Her personal best time stands at 53. 21 seconds and she believes that execution is key to improving her time in 2016.

“Nothing much is different (at Mico). (It is) just harder training and more confidence going forward for me.Time is not my target, it’s about execution and once I do that then I know the time will come, “ she stressed.

Having campaigned over the 400m and 800m and winning medal at both events during her Champs career, James explained that she has now established her niche at the 400m event.

“In high school my main event was the 400m. I just did the 800m in order to give my team points for champs. I think I did kind of ok in the 800m, hence I continued to run it, James said.

The two day Carifta Trials begins on Saturday at 11:00am.
