Kingston, Jamaica – February 9, 2016: At the half-way mark of the PCJ National Schoolgirls Chess Championship, the Campion College and Wolmer’s Girls ‘A’ teams are tied in the lead, each with a perfect score of four points.

The top two teams are followed closely by Wolmer’s Girls ‘B’ and Immaculate, who have three points each; while fifth place is being shared by Green Island ‘A’, Excelsior ‘A’ and Holy Childhood, who all have two points.

Competition is expected to be fierce in the final two rounds of play which are scheduled for Thursday February 11 at the PCJ Auditorium in New Kingston.  At that time Campion will challenge Wolmer’s Girls ‘A’ in a top of the table clash while Wolmer’s Girls ‘B’ will battle Excelsior ‘A’. Holy Childhood will try to outsmart Immaculate; Green Island ‘A’ will encounter Excelsior ‘B’ and Green Island ‘B’ will receive a bye in the absence of an opponent.

The Jamaica Chess Federation (JCF) has already indicated that the Schoolsgirls Tournament, which is being staged for the first time in almost 10 years, has had a successful return.  “We are already exploring how the Championship can be expanded for the next season and we are considering elements like having separate rural and urban zones so we can increase the amount of playing time for each team,” Ms. Listra Clemetson Chairman of the JCF Women’s Chess Committee explained.

“The Championship is a critical component of the Jamaica Chess Federation’s strategy to maintain Jamaica’s dominance of Women’s Chess in the English-speaking Caribbean at both the senior and junior levels so now that it’s back on the agenda, we plan to keep it going,” she added.
