ALIA ATKINSON TOPS THEM IN CARIBBEAN SOUTH AND CENTRAL AMERICA

Alia Atkinson has crowned herself as the South American, Central American, and Caribbean female swimmer of the year. It was another stellar year for the reigning Jamaican Sportswoman of the Year for 2014, in the pool.

Her bronze medal performance in the 100m breaststroke at the 2015 FINA World Championships in Kazan, Russia, made her the first Jamaican swimmer to medal at a Long Course World Championships and she also won the silver medal at the 2015 Pan Am Games in the 100m breaststroke.

She ripped through her own Jamaican National Record in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:05.93, and now ranks as the 16th-fastest 100 in the event in history.

Atkinson did extremely well on the FINA World Cup circuit, winning a combined 10 races over the 50m and 100m breaststrokes. It resulted in her finishing in 4th-place overall in the series for a total of $60,350 in earnings.

The 28 year old is once again the running for the RJR Sportswoman of the Year award and will be hoping to create history by being the only female swimmer to win consecutive titles.

The 2016 Rio Olympics will be the next big target as she looks to continue to break barriers and create history for the black green and gold at what would be her fourth consecutive Olympic Games. She represented Jamaica in Athens 2004, Beijing 2008 and London 2012.
