20th Alliance Buccaneer Golf Tournament Tees off on Saturday

The Alliance Buccaneer Memorial Golf Tournament was launched today (Wednesday, November 18) at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in Kingston  The 20th staging of the tournament which is Alliance’s 8th consecutive year of sponsorship will tee-off this Saturday and Sunday (November 21-22) at the Caymanas Golf Club with tee times between 7 am – 1 pm each day.  The pros, led by Wesley Brown will take to the course at 11:00 am while the juniors will tee off at 1:00 pm.

 

The tournament features two different competitions running concurrently.  One will be a two-day – 36-hole Jamaica Golf Association (JGA) qualifier while the other to be played on Sunday will be a modified Stableford competition in the form of a charity fund raiser for the Laws Street Trade Training Centre.  The objective for this year is to hand over in excess of the one million dollars which was paid last year.

 

The format of play features:  Saturday and Sunday – Medal Play HCP 1-12, Modified Stableford HCP 13-24, Professional, Men, Seniors, Super Seniors, Ladies and Juniors while on Sunday it will be Modified Stableford HCP 10-12, 13-24, 25-36, Men and Ladies.  The Juniors will compete for the Vitoria Marley Trophy who died in an accident on a golf course.  The Juniors will play in the U17, U15 and U13 age groups.

 

According to tournament director David Mais, some of the golfers who will be on the course include:  Pros:  Wesley Brown, Fabian Campbell, and Paul Warren; defending champion Shawn Morris, Super Seniors – Gordon Hutchinson and Wayne Chai Chong (former presidents of the JGA), Maurice Foster, Peter Chin (president of JGA) and Teddy Richards; Seniors Rory Jardine, Robert ‘Bobby’ Chin, Rory Jardine, Gregg Chong and Tommy Lee; Men –  Paul Thompson and Radcliffe Knibbs; Ladies –  Maggie Lyn and Juniors – Khai Harris and Tiana Cruz. 

 

Mike Fennell, president of the Jamaica Olympic Association had high praised for the organizers for its contribution to charity over a long period of time.  He said that he hoped that they exceed their expectation to hand over more than one million dollars to the Laws Street Trade Training Centre so that it can continue its good work of helping the people in its surrounding communities downtown. Fennell also indicated that golf will be a new sport at the next Olympics in Rio, Brazil.  He said the eighty players will be accommodated spread equally between men and women.  The format of play will be stroke play.  Jamaica will however not have any competitors as it will not have any qualifiers by then.  He encouraged the Jamaica Golf Association to build on its junior programme so that in time the country will have golfer/s to represent us.

 

This year’s competition is being played in the memory of five of Jamaica’s outstanding past national representatives, namely Milton ‘Buddy’ Josephs, Izette Rhone, Lenan Lennie Chin, John Fulford and Al Chong. 

 

The title sponsor is Alliance Investment Management while the associate sponsors are AMG Packaging & Paper Company, Digicel Business Solutions, Remax-Elite, Wata, Maxxis, Chadad and Supreme Ventures.

 

The awards presentation ceremony is scheduled for Monday, November 23 at Constant Spring Golf Club in Kingston beginning at 7:00 pm.
