Kaci Fennel for KSFJ RUN/WALK

The Kidney Support Foundation of Jamaica (KSFJ), Pharmaceutical Society of Jamaica (PSJ) and the Kiwanis Club of Constant Spring (KCCS) joined forces this year to stage their 5K Run/Walk for the first time. It was launched on Wednesday at the Club Lounge, George Headley Stand at Sabina Park.

Kaci Fennel, Miss Jamaica Universe and race ambassador endorsed the 5K Run/Walk while encouraging the public to support the event by participating for a good cause. She also confirmed her participation as well. The other race ambassadors are Olympians Juliet Cuthbert-Flyn and Warren Weir and athlete Ramone McKenzie.

Cdr. John McFarlane, chairman of the Kidney Support Foundation of Jamaica said that his organization decided to stage a joint 5K Run/Walk with the Pharmaceutical Society of Jamaica after running separate events last year with events actually crossing paths. This year is the 2nd event for KSFJ and the 3rd for PSJ. The beneficiaries will be the KSFJ and the KCCS ‘eliminate’ project aimed at pregnant women in Jamaica and worldwide, as the international project for Kiwanis across the world.

Dr. Ernestine Watson, 1st vice president of the Pharmaceutical Society of Jamaica indicated that the date of the 5K is Sunday September 20. It will start at 6:30 am with warm up at 6:00 am. The starting and ending point is the Police Officers’ Club on Hope Road. The route starts at Police Officers’ Club, left on Hope Road, left onto Trafalgar Road, across Lady Musgrave Road onto Downer Road, unto Old Hope Road, left onto Windsor Avenue, left onto Fairway Avenue, left unto Lady Musgrave Road (pass PSJ office on the on the left), left onto Hope Road and end at Police Officers’ Club.

Dr. Watson also said that there will be numerous prizes and some surprises. The category prizes include 1st, 2nd and 3rd male and female, youngest and oldest finishers, largest group, best dressed group and age group winners (teenagers (up to 19) 20 – 30, 31-50, 50 and over). Additionally all finishers will be invited to sign the ‘Finishers Signature Board’ from which random selections will be made and the selectees given prizes. One of the prizes is a one year scholarship to UCC for any of their courses.

Several corporate entities are supporting the 5K Run/Walk. They are Gatorade – hydration fluid, Benz – 2 lead cars for the run and walk as the races will start five minutes apart, NCB Foundation, Tapioca Village, This is Really Great Yogurt, Dunlop Corbin, Eden Gardens Nutraceuticals, Entrex Renal, Lifespan Water, Hot off the Press, Jamaica Cricket Association, Klas ESPN, Power 106, Music 99, KSAC, NWA, National Outdoor Advertising, Organo Gold, Seprod, and University College of the Caribbean.
