On a cold and wet night in Stockholm, Sweden, on a freshly laid track, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, sped to yet another victory in the Women’s 100m, her final race before the World Championships in Beijing, China.
The “pocket rocket” blew away the field in the last Diamond League meeting before the World Championships. Getting out ahead of the pack in her customary quick start, Fraser-Pryce powered through the middle of the race before finishing in a time of 10.93 running into a slight headwind. There was clear daylight between herself and American champion Tori Bowie who finished second in 11.05 while her Jamaican counterpart and training partner Natasha Morrison finished in third in 11.22.
Fraser-Pryce was the only Jamaican winner on the night.
In the Men’s 400, Rusheen McDonald came off the final turn ahead of the field and led the race with 50m to go, but was unable to hold off the chasing pack, fading badly into 6th position in 45.55. The race was won by Machel Cedenio of Trinidad and Tobago in 44.97, Lugeulin Santos of the Dominican Republic was second in 45.21 and third went to Martyn Rooney of Great Britain in 45.41. The other Jamaican in the race, Edino Steele finished 8th in 46.17.
In the Women’s 800m race, University of Technology student Simoya Campbell found the pace tough and was only good for 6th in 2:01.57. The race was won by Renelle Lamote of France in 1:59.91.
Cuban born Orlando Ortega, who will soon be representing Spain, showed that he will be a big miss in Beijing when he took the Men’s 110m hurdles in 13.18 ahead of Sergey Shubenkov 13.22 and David Oliver 13.24.
The athletes will now return to their various training camps to finish preparations for the World Championships that begin on August 22nd.
