It has been seven years since Sherone Simpson ran as fast as she did on Wednesday night and that excellent run of 10.95s was enough for her to snatch an improbable gold medal in the finals on the Women’s 100m at the Pan American Games in Ontario, Canada.

Drawn in lane 8, Simpson, like her lane placing, was an outsider to get any kind of medal in the final, but the veteran produced and fast finish in the closing stages to pip race leader Barbara Pierre on the line.

Having gone through a very difficult period in the last few years, it was a fitting reward for the former Olympic silver medalist who was a part of that infamous Jamaica 1-2-2, Women’s 100m final in Beijing, China in 2008, the last time she registered a sub-11 clocking.

Now a part of the Maurice Wilson led Sprint Tech Track Club, this gold medal will serve as the right motivation for the 30 year old ahead of the World Championships in late August when she returns to the Birds Nest.
