Jamaican Female Sprinter appointed assistant track coach

Former Collegiate standout and Jamaican Senior Track athlete Trisha-Ann Hawthorne, has been given the assistant coach job for the University of Connecticut (UCONS) ,women’s track and field program,. This was made public by the institutions head coach J.J. Clark on Tuesday.

Hawthorne who is Jamaican but completed most of her school and junior career in England, represented the institution nicknamed “the Huskies” for five years, from 2007-11, and has been one the most decorated athletes to have donned the colors of the University.

She has represented Jamaica at both the World Junior Championships and the Under 23 North America Central America and Caribbean (NACAC), before plying her trade as a senior athlete for the Black Green and Gold. Her last representation being at the Penn’s Relays in April 2014 where she teamed up with Carrie Russell, Kerron Stewart, and Anneisha McLaughlin to secure the women’s 4x100m relay.

She currently holds several records at the institution namely the 60, 100 and 200 metres indoors and the 100 and 200 metres outdoor.

Her many accolades include that of being selected as an NCAA All-American in the outdoor 100m as a junior and qualified for the IAAF World Jr. Championship.

Additionally, the sprinter earned 12 ECAC championships (100m, 200m, 4X100m) and was a four-time New England Champion (55m, 200m, 4X400m).

The coaching staff has expressed their joy of having the former student athlete back to impart her knowledge to the current athletes.

“We’re thrilled to add Trisha-Ann Hawthorne to our staff,” commented Clark. “She brings a wealth of experience on the track and comes from a compliance and administrative background. She rounds out our staff and we’re excited to have her on board as we get ready to begin the indoor season.

“Happy would be the word to choose for this new position,” Hawthorne told the school’s website.

Hawthorne will join another Jamaican, Clive Terrelonge, at the institution. Terrelonge, a former national 800m runner, is an associate head coach at the institution.

UConn opens up the 2015 indoor season on January 10 when they travel to New Haven, Connecticut to compete in the Yale Invitational.
