Jamaican distance Runners Shine Brightly at 14th staging of Reggae Marathon

The fourteenth staging of the Reggae Marathon is now history and Jamaican athletes were left smiling after copping top awards on the day. The event got started at 5:15 am on the Norman Manley Boulevard on Saturday with Some 1,576 runners from thirty-six countries.

The racers were packed in three categories, those being the 26.2 miles marathon, the 13.1 mile half marathon and the 6.2 miles 10k race.

Four time winner Rupert Green capture his fifth title in a time of 2: 34.35. He was trailed home by overseas competitor American Arturs Bareikis in 2:40.22 and fellow countryman and defending champion Gregory McKenzie finish third in 2: 45.16.

The female crown went to veteran Karlene Blagrave who shrugged off the pains and grief of losing her mom just days ago, to win in a time of 3:37.51, second and third place went to Canadian Dana Martin-Kelly (3:50.34) and Bahamian Roberta Fontana (3:59.52).respectively.

The half marathon titles went to male: Jamaican Kirk Brown (1:11:32) and Switzerland Melina Frei (1:31:06). Jassette Bromfield (1:16:29) and Kemar Leslie (1:19:16) completed the top three in the male event.

Frei led home her fellow competitors Juliett Dinnal (1:34:31) and Heather Colasuonno (1:38:11) for second and third respectively.

The Holmwood Technical High school pair of Shanieke Watson (39:50:00) and Lisa Buchanan (39:52:00) led home a quenella in the 10k, this ahead of Mavis Bank track Club athlete Danielle James (40:33:00).

It was a local clean sweep for the male race with first time winner Dwayne Graham (32:57:00), finishing ahead of Daniel Glave (33:03:00) and Frith Obrien (33:05:00).

Bellefield High won the boys team event while Holmwood topped the girls section.

Race director, Alfred Francis, was satisfied with what was deemed a successful meet was quoted as saying;”I am happy for the 14th staging of Reggae Marathon. We had over thirty-five different nations here in Jamaica and I was proud to see new countries like Latvia be here today,”
