Kingston, Jamaica: The players from Suriname outperformed their Caribbean and Central American counterparts to claim victory in the prestigious Digicel Kickstart Academy “3v3” tournament held at Sabina Park on Tuesday.

According to Chelsea FC Foundation Senior International Football Development Officer and Digicel Kickstart Academy Head Coach, David Monk, the Academy is giving players across the region a chance to shine. “We are happy to see that the Digicel Kickstart Academy is giving all players a chance to prove themselves and at the end of the “3v3” tournament, Suriname emerged as the winning side, surpassing more recognised regional football giants like Jamaica, Panama and Trinidad and Tobago. The Surinamese boys performed really well during the tournament and demonstrated great tactical awareness which undoubtedly contributed to their victory overall.”

Monk also went on to highlight that the boys have been embracing the Chelsea FC football philosophy of hard work, dedication and teamwork which was demonstrated in the games. He said; “We are very proud that despite language barriers, all of the Academy participants have adopted the CFC philosophy, meaning that at the end of the Academy, we will have stronger, more confident players.”

When asked about the readiness of the participants for the upcoming match against the Jamaica national U-16’s, he said; “Firstly, I just want to say congratulations to the Jamaica U-16’s who had a successful campaign in the recently-held CFU Championships and my team of coaches and I are very excited. We are expecting this match up to be an entertaining one as it will see championship teams and star players of the region go head to head. No doubt the Jamaican team is going to give our boys a good effort and I know our players will be bringing their “A” game against such a formidable team.”

The Academy is a culmination of the Digicel Kickstart Clinics which gave more than 400 players a chance to train with coaches from the Chelsea FC Foundation. The coaches not only trained the best of each country’s male and female players – but also hosted a separate session where the country’s top youth coaches received the very latest coaching techniques as used by Chelsea FC’s youth teams. \
