Wolmer’s Girls standout athlete Smith heads to Auburn University

Wolmerian Jonielle Smith is Auburn University bound for the upcoming academic school year where she hopes to continue her track career as well as her academic pursuits. Smith captained the Maroon and Gold ladies of wolmers, to 6th position at this year’s staging of the ISSA Boys and Girls Championship.

Smith claimed gold in the Class One girls 200m in a time of 23.49. She later went on to the 2014 Carifta Games as female team captain, where she won the shorter sprint in a time of 11.17s. Her inspirational leadership and motivational skills and saw her being selected again as team captain for the Female squad to the 2014 world juniors’ championship. She was however unable to participate at the games due to injury.

Auburn University announced late this week, that the young Jamaican sprint star will be stepping through their gates this upcoming academic year. Head coach Ralp Spry noted that it is a move taken to strengthen their women track team.

Smith who currently holds personal best times11.32 and 23.36 in the 100m and 200m respectively will be off very soon to take up her scholarship.

Smith will join the ranks of current and past Auburn Athletes who have made their names at the University. The list includes the likes of Samantha scarlet, Kerron Stewart, Elva Goulbourne, Maurice Smith, and Sanjay Ayre.
