Former Manchester United midfield masetro Paul Scholes has given his opinion on what his former club needs to get back to the top. The “ginger-head prince” who is not one for the limelight, opened up, giving his thoughts on the new manager Louis van Gaal as well as chief executive Ed Woodward.
Scholes says the 62 year old Dutch master tactician faces a big task at Old Trafford. He was quoted in the Daily Mail saying, ‘Louis van Gaal has the credentials. He’s been at the biggest clubs in the world but he has a major job on his hands at Man United.The fist player I would bring in is Toni Kroos. He’s a top-class central midfield player but United need five or six to get anywhere near the top of the Premier League again.”
He continued, ‘It’s a massive task and there’s a big gap to fill to catch Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool next season. United are a long way behind. If van Gaal gets them to the Champions League, it’ll be a start.’
Scholes has also questioned the chief executive’s ability to do his job and hinted that Woodward should shoulder some of the blame for David Moyes’ troubles. Woodward failed to secure the summer targets last summer and United paid the price by finishing in seventh position.
He told the BBC, ‘Edward Woodward has an awful lot to prove this time that he’s good enough at his job. He has to bring the players in that the new manager wants. It’s obvious that last year he didn’t manage to do that. If he doesn’t, we are not going to get anywhere near the top.’
Scholes ia member of the famous Class of ’92 and is one of the best midfielders of his generation. He was referred to as the best central midfielder in the world over the last 10-15 years in 2011 by Barcelona pass master Xavi Hernandez. Zinedine Zidane also praised Scholes saying his only regret is that the opportunity to play with the English man never presented itself during his playing days.
