Kingston, Jamaica; When the 2014 installment of the University of The West Indies Hockey Invitational gets underway on Saturday February 15, teams from the island’s secondary institutions will have a chance to compete in the newly added Under 19 category for both male teams.

The Mona Hockey Turf will once again be the venue which will stage the invitational competition for the island’s premier hockey club teams to vie for over $100,000 in cash and prizes, with each winning team copping $50,000 in the club section. This year however, the organizers have gone a step further to include an Under 19 category in which several schools are set to compete.

“This is simply a mechanism to aid the continued development of the sport in Jamaica. Over recent years Hockey has not always been at the forefront of sporting activities and there is an emerging need to keep interest in the sport. The Under 19 category will be a great vehicle to keep youngsters interested in the sport and to also show their talent at a highly competitive level. Additionally, we are committed to offering scholarships to talented individuals across all sporting disciplines, so it also becomes an opportunity for the youngsters to impress with their talents,” explained Mr. Dalton Myers, Director of Sports at University of The West Indies.

The ten Under 19 teams will include Munro College, Browns Town Community College, Old Harbour High, Jamaica College, Kingston College, St. Andrew Technical, Papine High, KC Strikers, Sharpes and Wolmers’ Boys will compete.

In the Club Division, Circus Circle Hockey Club will return to defend their title against the likes of Phoenix Hockey Club, Explorers Hockey Club, UTech Hockey Team and UWI Hockey Team among several other teams in the men’s section. The women’s section will see the UWI Hockey Team, UTech Hockey Team, Excelsior Hockey Club and Sharpes Rebel Hockey Club, Tropics Hockey Club competing to dethrone the defending champions, St. Andrew Strikers.

The UWI Hockey Invitational is set to be a fun filled day come Saturday, February 15, at the Mona Hockey Turf. Gates open at 9am and admission is free. Patrons can bring their families to witness quality competition and be a part of the giveaways courtesy of this year’s sponsors Hi-Lyte and Seprod.
