World Championship Silver medalist from the 2013 Games in Russia, Edina Steele aims to ‘go harder’ as the season progresses after opening up with a record breaking performance in January.

The Racers Track Club quarter miler broke the 400m record previously held by Usain Bolt at the Queens/Grace Jackson Development Meet held at the National Stadium in Kingston recently but was far from happy with his overall performance.

“The record wasn’t a big of a deal …it’s a good opener but I am not really happy with my time but as coach (Glen Mills) says it’s a stepping stone, I’m happy I came out injury free,” he said.

Steele coasted to victory in the one lap event but has his eyes set on lowering the time in short order.

“I am where I am supposed to be at this time. It’s still early and not a lot of people are running what I just ran so early in the season.”

“A lot of 400m runners open a lot later when they are much sharper. I am not sharp yet, it’s coming on, I am taking it one meet at a time. The next meet is the Camperdown Meet and I am guaranteeing it will be faster than this 46.7 I just ran today,” he said with a chuckle.

With all the top athletes from the Racers Camp expected to compete, Steele will no doubt be pressed a lot harder in his next race. As they did last year, the top sprinters from the Racers Track Club will participate in the 400 meters including the likes of Yohan Blake who has not raced competitively since picking up a hamstring injury early last year.
