Boys running fast early in February

It was only the first day of February but the boys were already running fast at the 2014 Edition of the Youngster-Goldsmith Athletics Classics at the National Stadium in Kingston Jamaica.

It was only the first day of February but the boys were already running fast at the 2014 Edition of the Youngster-Goldsmith Athletics Classics at the National Stadium in Kingston Jamaica.

The Classics, which is a part of a slew of development meets that help to prepare athletes for the ISSA/Grace Kennedy Track and Field Championships, got off to a prompt start and many were surprised to see Jaheel Hyde contesting the 400 hurdles. Known for his exploits in the shorter version of the event, the World Youth Champion at 110m hurdles, won his heat comfortably in a time of 53.20. It was the third fastest time of the day and it was his first outing at the event which suggests that he may be in the reckoning come the end of March.

The first really fast time of the day came when World Championship silver medalist in the 4x400m, Javon Francis, blazed to an impressive 45.95, to set tongues wagging about just how fast he may go by the time the Commonwealth games roll around this summer.

The 100m were contested in the cool of the evening and this may have helped to contribute to the fast times clocked in classes 2 and 1.

As he has done since the first weekend in January, Akeem Bloomfield strolled away from the field and clocked an impressive 10.64 in his heat of the Class 2 Boys – 100m only to watch as his teammate Jhevaughn Matherson ran an identical time with almost the same ease.

Those times were recorded on the back of some impressive running by the Class 3 boys of Calabar which had already set the crowd abuzz.

Jevaughn Minzie was next to join the party with a smart 10.49 in the Class 1 Boys 100m after competing in the 400m earlier in the day. The sprinter was clearly impressed with his time after revealing that he had not trained for an entire week due to illness and rain.

Mario Williams of Kingston College was also impressive in clocking 10.59 in his heat of the 100m.

These special times so early in the season, points clearly to ‘Champs’ being equally as special as the record breaking 2013 spectacle.
