The tenth staging of the Camperdown Classics was launched on Wednesday January 30th 2014, at the Spanish Court hotel and from the sound of things, fans could be in for another treat based on utterances from the chairperson of the organizing committee, Cynthia Cooke.

The tenth staging will be special for all concerned especially the school and officials that have been a part of the event since year one in 2005.

Cooke said, “Every athlete, every official and every coach will leave with some token or gift to remember the tenth. There will be special gifts for the winners of the ten, 100m events. The schools who have been with us for the ten years will receive gift vouchers, the coaches and the officials will receive memorabilia. We have special 10th staging trophies for the winners of all events and special medals for the runners-up.”

Special gifts are being provided for the 100m winners because as Cooke put it, the meet is a ‘Showcase of Sprinters’.

Class 1 relay winners will again receive cash gifts, the winners will pocket $60,000, second place will receive $25,000 and third place will get $15,000.

As has become a trend, members of the Racers Track Club will open their season at the Camperdown Classics and it was stated that all the members of the club who are fit will be on show come Saturday February 8th.

Cooke said that banter at training is at an all time high as the sprinters have been threatening each other daily in training about who will be beating who, with claims that some people ‘have belly but no guts’. Like last year, the sprinters will be running the 400m and this will make it even more interesting for the patrons.

Speaking on behalf of the sponsors, Allison Dexter , Brand Manager for Ensure, said that her company was happy to be a part of the event and happy to be a part of the development of athletes.

“Events like these help to unearth talent and another Shelly -Ann or another Usain may come from this meet. Sports help to unify the country, we see it in football, we see it in track and field and we see it in other sports, so it is important for us to give our support,” she said.

This year the school will honour former Camperdown football standout and Jamaica representative Ricardo ‘Wily Boo’ Fuller
