Cuba left crying as T&T top Group A in CFU U-20’s

Cuba and Trinidad and Tobago met Tuesday October 22 to decide who would top Group A of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Under-20 Women’s Football Finals at the Waterhouse Mini-Stadium in what was expected to be a massive showdown.

Cuba and Trinidad and Tobago met Tuesday October 22 to decide who would top Group A of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Under-20 Women’s Football Finals at the Waterhouse Mini-Stadium in what was expected to be a massive showdown.

The first half was tight as both teams battled for supremacy in the wet and slippery conditions from rain earlier in the day. Trinidad and Tobago created the better chances and could have taken the lead long before they did in the 40th minute.

Cuba were not in the mood to roll over and play dead and found the equalizer on the stroke of half time to leave the fans on the edge of their seats.

The Soca lasses returned a more focused and clinical bunch in the second half, scoring two more goals while shutting out their opponents as they stamped their class on Group A.

Cuban tears flowed free with the sound of the final whistle almost as much as the rain earlier in the day. Despite the loss, Cuba will advance to the semifinals where they will face the winner of Zone B which will come from the pair of Jamaica and the Dominican Republic who meet today for zone honours.

Speaking with Yardie Sports after the game Trinidad and Tobago coach Izler Browne said, “We should have killed off the game as a contest from the first half but we didn’t put away our chances. I like the way the girls responded in the second half to get us the win.

“We are happy to top the zone, it puts us in pole position right now and it means we avoid Jamaica for now, which is a good thing. We still need to work of killing off our opponents and that is something we will need to keep working on but overall it was a pleasing performance.”
