Second Staging of CB Group UWI 5K for November 17

Kingston, Jamaica; The 2nd Annual CB Group UWI 5K Run/Walk will be staged on Sunday, November 17, at the UWI Mona Bowl.  Set to begin at 7a.m. the 2013 staging promises to be even more successful than the inaugural event.

In this their second year, lead sponsor Caribbean Broilers has committed to a three consecutive year partnership. Mr. Matthew Lyn, Chief Operating Officer, CB Group, said, “We are committed to this event and to continuously playing our part in improving our education system at all levels. We sincerely hope our efforts create opportunities for the development of outstanding students, athletes and citizens that will proudly represent, contribute and build our beloved country. “

The inaugural event in 2012 was the largest fundraiser for the Mona Campus, as it attracted 2,500 participants and netted J$18 Million Dollars. This financial inflow facilitated (20) academic and sports scholarships being awarded to outstanding first and second year students enrolled at the Campus for the academic year 2013-2014.

This year’s honouree will be The Honourable Michael ‘Mike’ Fennell, OJ., for his dedicated service to the Jamaica Olympic Association as President for 36 years. During which time Jamaicas’ reputation as a sprinting force surged to the forefront, in the Olympics.  Last year, The Honourable Glen Mills, OJ was recognized by the 5K committee for his outstanding contribution to athletics.

Chairpersons; The Honourable Douglas Orane, OJ., Chair of Grace Kennedy and The Honourable G. Raymond Chang, OJ, Chancellor Emeritus, Ryerson University. Co-Chairs Ms. Minna Israel, Special Advisor to the Vice Chancellor of UWI and Mrs. Thalia Lyn, C.E.O., Island Grill, are all devoted to coordinating another successful event geared towards the development of the next generation of athletes and scholars.

With such strong leadership, the numbers of registrants and corporate donations are expected to surpass the previous staging. According to Mr. Orane, “The kick off of the CB UWI 5K in 2012 was exceptionally successful; the energy of each member of the committee members on Campus, in Canada and throughout the island was outstanding.  It was great teamwork.”

“This year we look forward to a greater event.  The cause is noble and our young people will benefit along with infrastructure for athletes,” Mr. Orane continued.

An added feature of the 2013 CB Group UWI 5K is the “Children Walk/Run”.  To this end, UWI will be hosting ‘Kid 2K’ for children 7-14 years old on the same day, starting at 7:00 a.m.  as well in the Mona Bowl. 

The CB Group UWI 5K opens registration on Monday, October 28, which closes on Friday, November 8. In preparation for the run new lights will be installed at the UWI Mona Bowl to facilitate  training for the participants before the event.
