UWI WFC slammed St. Thomas 9-1 to register their largest margin of victory ever in the Sherwin Williams Women’s Premier League on Wednesday. It was the largest margin of victory on a day when two of the league’s games were postponed due to commitment of the now revived senior women’s program.

Having lost in their two previous outings and teetering on the brink of being cut adrift by Barbican and Harbour View, UWI started the game like a team desperate for three points. Taking advantage of the fact that their opponents were late and unsettled, the Mona based team were on the front foot from the first whistle and on the score board from only the 6th minute through a composed finish from Felicia Lee-Sin.

Buoyed by the early goal, the home team doubled their lead three minutes later when Melesa Anderson blasted home from just outside the area, and were 3-0 ahead on minute 16 when Sherona Forrester headed home a Rochelle Bryan right sided cross.

UWI continued to look purposeful and refused to take their foot off the pedal as Bryan, Forrester and Anderson totally dominated the midfield while Carmen Christie and particularly Jodi-Ann Thomas tormented the St. Thomas full backs.

It was no surprise when UWI added to their lead as Lee-Sin poached on a rebound to slot home on minute 25.

As UWI hunted more goals to boost their goal average, captain Alahna Grant joined in the attack to good effect with a  good combination play with Christie before being fouled on the edge of the area. Grant who remained in an advanced position for the resulting free kick, headed home from close range to make it 5-0 seven minutes before the break.

The runaway UWI goal scoring machine was halted in its tracks on minute 41 when Sharon Cousins collected a good pass and rounded the UWI custodian Shaquille Laing before slotting home to reduce the deficit by one.

UWI’s response was swift. Two minutes later, Thomas who had been St. Thomas’s main tormentor, collected a pass from Bryan inside the area and smartly finished with a one-time effort to round out the first half scoring.

The second half was more of the same with the home team completely dominating their opponents. UWI managed to add three more goals courtesy of Bryan who got a brace in the 53rd and 63rd minutes and Thomas who capped a fine performance, when she collected a pass from Forrester wide on the left, weave her way past two defenders, before powering her shot to the far post only a minute after Bryan had scored her second.

There were two games played in Zone B. Los Perfectos punished Frazsiers Whip 6-0 with a brace from Shantell Thompson in the 8th and 36th minute. Los Perfectos led 5-0 at the half and now occupy first place atop the zone. In the other game in the zone, Arnett Gardens and Waterhouse, both of whom had an outside chance of making the end of round finals with a win, played out a nil-all stalemate effectively ending both their chances.

Defending champions Barbican will play Olympic Gardens and GC Foster will play Trelawny Women’s FC next week Wednesday to complete the first round and determine the end of round finalists.
