Didier Dechamps moved one step closer to becoming only the third person to win the World Cup as a player and a coach when his France team defeated tow time champions Uruguay 2-0 in the first quarter final of the FIFA World Cup in on Friday.

Goals either side of half time from defender Raphael Varane and midfielder Antoine Griezmann eased the 1998 champions in the Tuesday’s semifinal in St. Petersburg.

Uruguay started on the front foot with Stuani the replacement for Edinson Cavani forcing the first save out of Hugo Loris who punched away a header after a Uruguay corner.

Edinson Cavani inspired Uruguay to a 2-1 win over Portugal in their round of 16 World Cup tie on Saturday with two fantastic strikes. Cavani set the South Americans on their way when he headed home early, only for Pepe to equalize, also with a header shortly after half time. Cavani then scored the winner with just under half hour to play to seal the win and get his team into the quarter finals.

A second half brace from teenager Kylian MBappe and goals from Antoine Griezmann and Benjamin Pavard helped steer France to a sensational 4-3 win over Argentina in the first game of the round of 16 in the FIFA World Cup. Argentina’s goals came from Angel Di Maria, Meacado and Sergio Aguero as Lionel Messi and his team exited the competition at the first knock out stage.

A classic World Cup game was expected from two of the favourites to win it all and they managed to live up to expectations in an intense and enthralling encounter.

The President of the Jamaica Football Federation, captain Horace Burrell is dead. Burrell who had been ailing for some time passed away peacefully in Florida on Tuesday.

Burrell had the vision and foresight need to get Jamaica to qualify for the World Cup of football in 1998 in his first stint as President of the JFF between 1994 and returned to the top post in 2007 until the time of his passing, he was 67 years old.

The Rio Olympics 2016 got underway on Wednesday with Women’s football and Germany made a huge statement if intent when they clobbered African minnows Zimbabwe 6-1. Other winners on the day were defending Olympic champions and World champions, USA, their North American neighbours Canada, France, Sweden and hosts Brazil who had a comprehensive 3-0 win over China.

Sweden got the ball rolling at the games with a narrow 1-0 win over South Africa courtesy of a strike from Nilla Fischer who capitalized on a goalkeeping error.

The Stade de France Stadium was sent into a frenzy on Friday night after the completion of the World Cup qualifier involving the home team France and Germany. The match ended 2-0 in favour of the French team over the World Champions.

As the fans and spectators make ready their way to exit the Stadium, loud explosions were heard sending the masses scampering for covers. Most of them took to the infield, huddling together after the final whistle, before being evacuated.

1998 World Champions France are in great form and will be firing on all cylinders when they tackle Germany in their quarter-final encounter of the World Cup. Les Bleus has found the net on ten occasions in their four fixtures so far and conceded just twice. Germany are the slight favourites in this fixture but Didier Deschamps' men have what it takes to leave the Maracana as semi-finalists.

Young Juventus midfielder and the rising star of French Football Paul Pogba showed his class against African Champions Nigeria to set-up a 2-0 victory in their round of 16 encounter. The classy midfielder broke the deadlock late on and an own goal from Joseph Yobo in stoppage time gave Les Bleus a hard fought win in a game where they were really pushed to the limit.
