CHAMPS 2015- DAY TWO ROUND UP
Action pack 200m heats
It was a double take for defending girls champions Edwin Allen in the 200 Meter Dash Class 4, with Shanique Rowe (25.00) and Kevona Davis (25.08) top qualifiers for the finals. They were joined by one of the event favourites St. Jago's Joanne Reid (25.13), Mount Alvernia High pair of Soyinne Grenyion 25.16 secs and Shannakay Andrews (26.04). The final field is completed by Nattesha Palmer Holmwood Technical (25.82) and Dorian Nelson Excelsior High (26.04).
Class Three saw St. Jago High's Kimone Shaw (24.60), leading the pack. Anna-Kay Allen St. Catherine High 24.86 secs, Ashanti Moore Hydel High (24.94) and Kiara Grant Convent of Mercy (25.33) all safely through to the finals.
Shellece Clark 24.18 and Kasheika Cameron of Edwin Allen High 24.41 s looked easy in qualifying; taking top spots in the class two girls 200m
Calabar High ensured they kept sounding the alarm in the Boys class 2, 200m, with the top two qualifiers coming through, Christopher Taylor (21.63) ahead of teammate Tyreke Wilson 21.68secs. Perennial rivals of North Street were 7th and 8th best qualifiers with Tyreke Bryan (22.10) and expected top challenger Jhevaughn Matherson (22.29) respectively.
The top eight qualifiers for the Class One Girls also lived up to expectation to the silky smooth and event favourite Saqukine Cameron Edwin Allen High 23.59 s, joining her for the final were Shanice Reid 23.78 and Natalliah Whyte 23.80 s of St. Jago High, Shian Hyde 24.65s and Carmaleta Griffiths 24.70 s of St. Catherine High, Shashalee Forbes 24.30 and Britney Hew 24.82 of Holmwood Technical along with Rene Medley (24.65) of Vere Technical High.
Class 1 boys 200m per race favorite Michael O'Hara of Calabar High 21.02 s was the top qualifier, ahead of Nigel Ellis St. Elizabeth 21.16 secs and Twayne Crooks of Kingston College 21.23 s.
Easy going for 800m qualifiers
Chad Miller of Kingston College ( 1:55.44' ) led all qualifiers in the 800 Meter Class One Boys. He was joined by the likes of Rogay Granston of Holmwood Techn (1:55.97), Akeem Francis of Edwin Allen High ( 1:56.83) and Paul Tate of St. Elizabeth (1:57.99)
Class Three 800m Girls, top three qualifiers were Cemore Donald of Edwin Allen High 2:12.93 s ahead of Kimone Campbell of Spaldings High 2:14.93 and Kelly-ann Beckford, Albert Town High 2:16.49 secs. The remaining finalist included Sovereena Silburn of St. Jago High 2:19.74, Delverna Bromfield of Holmwood Tech 2:21.02 , Sanique Walker of Vere Technical High 2:16.62 s, Kayan Green of Edwin Allen High 2:17.67 s and Tara Bert Rusea's High ,2:18.73 secs.
Mix fortunes in 400m hurdles Open
Shiann Salmon of Hydel High (59.21), Genekee Leith(59.23 secs) and Andrenette Knight St. Jago High1:00.10 s led all qualifiers. However Two of the main challengers for the tops three spots, in new kid on the block, Junelle Bromfield St. Elizabeth and Patrice Moody Edwin Allen High were both non finishers in the event qualifiers.
In the boys section it was as expected, with all top qualifiers moving to events grand finale. Jaheel Hyde Wolmer's High 52.28 secs did enough to win heat one. Kingston College’s Davian Baker 52.75 secs was second best qualifier with the St. Elizabeth Technical pair of Robin Black (53.32 secs) and Marvin Williams 53.67 secs respectively.
The sprint Relays- the moment of thrills and spills
Edwin Allen High smashed the old mark set by St Jago, 47.28 secs, crossing the line in an impressive time of 46.90 secs. Excelsior also looked good in qualifying with 48.75 s. Six teams including Holmwood Technical were disqualified based volition of IAAF rule 170.7 in the Class 4 Girls.
St Jago led home all the main Campaigners in the Class 3 event with a winning time of 46.95 secs.
Top four qualifiers for the class three boy’s events were Jamaica College 43.58 secs, St. Jago High 43.85 secs, Kingston College 44.15 secs and Calabar High 44.27 secs.
Edwin Allen High 45.42 seconds qualified best of all in the Class 3 Girls relay, ahead of a decent looking team from Green Island High 46.18s and Hydel High 46.78 secs.
The Calabar team seemed to have lost concentration and lost out on big points as the Boys Class Two team did not finish their heat, having a baton mishap on the final change over . Top qualifying spot went to Jamaica College (41.77s). Wolmer's High School for Boys qualified second best (42.29). Kingston College 42.55 qualified sixth best for the finals.
St Jago team was unable to finish their heat, after they had a mis-positioned of their anchor leg athlete in a wrong lane and hence there may be a re- run of the race won by Greater Portmore High school. 43.4s.
In Class One there were no causalities as all the top contenders advanced from their respective heats. The fastest coming from St Jago, who did 40:01 secs to win heat 2.
Kingston College 40.05 secs, Calabar 40.04 seconds and Jamaica College 40.91 seconds won the other three heats to qualify for the finals.
St Jago and Holmwood Technical looked best of all, in the girls qualifiers. St Jago won heat one in 45.34 while Holmwood won heat three in 45.66 secs. Edwin Allen secured heat two in 45.79secs.
Holmwood Tech, closed with Double Golden chase
Shanieke Watson of Holmwood Tech retained the Girls 2000M Steeplechase title in a time of 7:12.78, ahead of moniefa Green Hydel High 7: 21.84 and Edwin Allen pair of Alvina Howell 7: 27.98 seconds and Teresha Jacobs 7:29.29 seconds.
The Boys event went to Daniel Glave of Holmwood Technical.
