The curtains came down on the XXII Peru International Challenge 2017 Sunday April 23. Three of our national senior players namely Dennis Coke, Katherine Wynter and Anthony McNee went to Peru for a one week workshop before the tournament and participated in the tournament April 20-23, 2017.

McNee suffered a knee injury which hampered him significantly throughout the tournament, and Coke was also nursing an injury. Nevertheless, they were able to manage the injuries while there.

McNee made an early exit in his singles campaign going down to Portuguese Duarto Nuno Anjo 21-16, 21-15. McNee and Coke teamed up in the Mens Doubles where they got a walkover the Slovaks Milan Dratva and Matej Hlinican. Jamaica’s Mens Doubles campaign ended in the next round when they were defeated by Peruvians Mario Cuba and Diego Mini 21-7, 21-19.

Coke fared better in his singles event when he got by Peruvian Raul Blondet Martinez without lifting a racquet. He then defeated Cory Fanus of Barbados 21-13, 21-18. In the following round he defeated another Peruvian Gustavo Alfredo Salazar coming from a game down 19-21, 21-12, 21-16. Coke then found the going rough against Mexican Job Castillo losing 21-11, 21-17.

Wynter also made an early exit in her singles campaign losing to Peruvian Daniela Macias 21-12, 21-8. However, is was her teaming up with Coke in mixed doubles that provided Jamaica with its only silverware in Peru.

Wynter and Coke got a bye, then a walkover, landing them in the quarterfinals. There they met Peruvians Deza and Castillo, where the Jamaicans got down to the business. They defeated Deza and Castillo 21-15, 22-20. They then met another set of Peruvians in the semifinals by way of Dacias and Salazar who they brushed aside 21-11, 21-12. Wynter and Coke again met a Peruvian pair in the finals in the form of Maria Cuba and Katherine Winder who turned up the heat and defeated the Jamaicans 21-9, 21-9.

This was a successful tour of duty for the Jamaicans. All three players returned to the island April 24, 2017 where they were met on arrival by the General Secretary Antonio Bell and  National team Coach Neil Lewis.
