A man of the match performance from the returning Vishnul Harris guided former champions Arnett Gardens to an easy 3-0 win over relegation threatened Marverley/Hughenden in the Red Stripe Premier League on Sunday night.

Playing at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex for the first time in ten months, Harris showed just how much of a loss he has been for the West Kingston based team as he took control of the midfield with his silky skills and precise passing to have the Marverly defenders chasing shadows.

Harris started and finished off a sublime move to open the scoring in the 14th minute when he drove at the Marverley defence before a give and go with Fabian Reid saw him face to face with Jovell Plunkett. He showed great composure to lob the advancing keeper, marking a happy return after a long layoff with a persistent foot injury.

Marcelino Blackburn was denied the second goal of the contest when his swerving free kick was well held by Plunkett shortly after.

Harris missed a brilliant opportunity to crown himself in glory after Reid was brought down in the box by Plunkett who was late on the challenge. The goalkeeper composed himself to make up for his own error when he dived to his left to effect a brilliant save and keep the score at 1-0.

Marverley had offered very little in the offensive third but came close when Denardo Thomas let fly from distance but his shot swerved away from the frame of the goal at the last second.

Arnett should have gone in 2-0 at the break when Harris provided the most delicate of chipped pass to play in Blackburn but Plunkett was out in a flash to thwart the effort. The rebound fell kindly to Jovan Abou but his effort was cleared off the line by an alert Kasia Hinds.

Marverley almost caught Arnett flatfooted at the start of the second half when Thomas headed a right sided cross from Rodico Wellington onto the upright with only seconds on the second half clock.

A minute later Arnett were up 2-0. A floated free kick from stand in captain Marvin Morgan found an unmarked Blackburn at the far post and the striker had the easiest of tasks to turn the ball in to double his team’s lead in the 47th minute.

Marverley tried to claw their way back in the contest but failed to seriously challenge Omarley Francis in the Arnett Gardens goal.

Abou wasted a chance to get his name on the scoresheet when Raymond Williamson slipped inside the box and gifted him possession, but the striker was denied by the impressive Plunkett who again came to the rescue of the Marverley team, saving with his feet.

Second half substitute Oniel Anderson made the game safe for Arnett when he powered home at the near post from just inside the box to make it 3-0 in the 86th minute.

“The team did well, we used a lot of fringe players today. We will continue to give them more playing time as we give the first team players more time to rest ahead of the playoffs. When we get to that point we will see who is the best eleven to take us forward” said a pleased Jerome Waite.

“The only thing we have in our favour is that two of the teams fighting relegation, they have lost (as well). We have to put things right and come out fighting for the next three games. We have had bad luck, we played well in the second half but some small errors cost us. The score line did not reflect how well we played,” said a disappointed Byjeon Thomas.

Marverley are rooted at the foot of the table on 28 points after 30 games played, one point less than Jamalco FC who have played a game more. With just three games left in their premier league season, Marverley will need to win all their remaining games and hope other results go their way to avoid returning to the Super League after more than two decades outside of top flight football.

Arnett Gardens have not yet sealed 6th spot but did themselves a huge favour by winning at home after an away day defeat last time out.
